I don't think you have researched it for starters, most domestic vehicles probably do way less than 5,000 miles per annum. Where did you get this mileage figure from?

Well we can set the allowance lower if you like. But I visit the family in Maidstone once a week taking two hours in the car which seems reasonable. That's over 5,000 miles a year for a start.

I'll be honest, I like the concept, but have a problem with thresholds. For instance a driver in the north of the country will probably do more annual mileage than a user in the south. If a fair algorithm could be developed, I'd support this, and by fair I mean more scientific than I drive to Maidstone every week :)

It's Michael but there you go. Maybe using public transport whenever possible would be a start.

That's why I said wherever possible.
When you stand idly waiting for the light to change to the crossing phase on Green Lanes, it gives you plenty of time to see who is in the cars that pass by. Many have only one person, the driver, and many are young. Getting those off the roads who can use public transport will surely only make it better for those who have no choice but to use a car and make make more space for a more reliable and comprehensive public transport network.
Changing traffic light phasing or removing road bumps won't change the fact that the number of vehicles on London's roads increases year on year and capacity isn't going to increase

See that's where I disagree, making choices for other people just feels a bit too socialist for me. If you buy a car, pay your insurance, tax, petrol, and MOT if required, why should anybody tell you how you use it?

I think you should only use your television between 4pm and 7.30pm as to save electricity.

But you do make choices for me Godfrey. My bus moves slowly because of the amount of car traffic. I get a minute to cross the road on the green man while you get far longer to drive over a crossing. I'm hemmed into narrow pavements that stop at every road so vehicles can drive past while I wait.
Cities are designed for the convenience of car drivers, not pedestrians. Every road, every junction, every crossing favour drivers over those on legs. Your choice restricts my choices everytime I leave my home. Isn't it fair that I have a say too?

I don't think you are right on this, I and you abide by the law, including Highways act and Road Traffic. I don't dictate that you use the bus, I just operate within the law. using your own logic, you are infringing me by using a diesel high polluting vehicle that slows traffic and frequently stops the flow as the driver has some delusions of grandeur in regards to importance, sharing road space and agility and width of the vehicle itself. Your bus moves slowly because you are part of the traffic system that needs fixing, not because I chose to use a car. Your journey is not a) more important, B) more righteous than mine. You have no right to feel infringed by me, you should direct your comments to the road maintainers, and traffic managers, not me.

Edit: Oh I forgot, you want me to join you on the bus because what's good enough for you should be good enough for me right?

I'm glad for you to have a say, but I don't remember building the city infrastructure personally, so you wanting to have your say but insinuating that I am the cause of your restrictions is plain daft. yes cars have a higher precedence than pedestrians, maybe the balance could be addressed, but it sounds like you are blaming the car driver for this situation. Just remember we don't make the roads / rules, we just abide by them, same as you.

I do not blame you personally at all. But it is the cumulative impact of thousands and thousand of these decisions every day that cause the problems we see in London and other big cities.
My bus is polluting, yes, and that needs to be addressed but think about a single bus journey on the 29 from Wood Green to Trafalgar Square. When I get on at a stop in Green Lanes there are something like 40 people on it already. In the course of the journey many get on and off meaning that by the time it terminates hundreds have used this single vehicle. The car front of me has one passenger. It's about the arithmetic and economics of the choices we make.
In the course of debates here on HoL - and there have been many - about car use versus public transport, one of the not unreasonale arguments against switching has been the unreliability of buses and the length of time the journey takes. And that is an issue because of the level of congestion on London's streets. So the issue just keep turning in an unresolved circle.
I can't see that resolving itself as the incentive to give up a car journey for a bus one currently isn't compelling enough. That why I think the only way to shift the balance is to make it less attractive use a car in towns and cities.
If you have your own thoughts about how that might be achieved it would be interesting to read them. M
