Harringay Protest - Stop Killing Londoners: Cut Air Pollution

I just came across this video. Did anybody catch this on Green Lanes last month?

Oh but Wightman Rd is open again. Surely Green Lanes is just wonderful...

Wow, the Traders Association didn't manage to get this suppressed? Incredible.

I saw it, the police let them make a statement but cleared the protesters off the road before the disco really got going.

I was there.
It was a fun 10 minutes.
Some of the drivers were not too happy.  One even ranted out a load of sexual abuse.  But other than that, it was fun.  There was a disco, but it was only very short (a few minutes).   No need to dance in the face of pissed off drivers for too long, ya know ;)

The next protest is on 25 October at 18:00–21:00 @

the intersection of Oxford Street and Portman Street Central London W1C 2AU

Its normally a 10 minute protest at a junction or road.  A few locations might be done on the day, hence the time being a few hours.  Normally with a little local drink, after the event.

Protests for clean air and less pollution by...

creating more pollution?!?!?!

If they want to do something constructive, why don't they campaign against the ridiculous traffic light volume and phasing around London which is probably the biggest contributor to pollution, along with speed humps. Looks more like a vanity project for some bored do gooders, asking people not to drive is never going to work.

"asking people not to drive is never going to work."

Indeed this is the case. Which is why one doesn't ask, but instead creates a scenario that makes driving so unappealing an option, that people elect not to do so. There are a number of ways to engender this result--and mine is not an exhaustive list:

1) Crippling Petrol Taxes (already done)

2) High Vehicle Insurance Rates (already done)

3) Congestion Tax (already done, but can be expanded concentrically outwards)

4) Require periodic inspections (MOT) - (Done, but there is plenty of room to tweak the results so that more vehicles cannot pass and therefore have to be scrapped)

5) Public policy tinkering, e.g., a high tax surcharge on any car, e.g, registered in London that can't be associated with a business use (not done).

6) Traffic Flow Controls - I can't speak for the rest of London but one whole point of blocking (filtering) Wightman Road is to act as a disincentive to people to drive. There are long discussions about this elsewhere on this site.

Unfortunately your perspective comes from your own perception of driving, traffic, and pollution. I suppose I have another perspective and don't subscribe to the thinly disguised socialist leaning that everyone should be made to ker tow to the state's policy and if you stray beyond this you have to pay (as you so kindly produced a list of to emphasise my point).

Let's get something straight, I, like any other sane individual wants to see pollution reduced for health, the planet, and eco reasons. I, like any other sane person has researched enough to conclude that petrol and diesel engines at rest are major contributors to harmful pollution and wasteful. I, like any other sane person would like to see a reduction by clever traffic management, meaning reducing traffic lights, introducing more temporary usage for traffic lights, that are essential during peak hours but pointless at other times (think lollipop ladies / men - have you ever seen them being used out of their peak hours? and why is that?)

I would like to see some traffic lights substituted with mini roundabouts, again, removing the waste and pollution of waiting at a traffic light for 5 minutes for no reason other than the phasing on the traffic lights are set for 4-7pm peak hours.

So before we go down the route of calling car drivers the devil and taxing them off the roads (which inevitably will lead to a road full of 'haves' who can afford exterminate taxation), I simply think we should rethink our roads themselves, and how wasteful they have become, especially since the congestion charge was introduced. It has been reported that all the traffic light phasing within central London was changed to clog traffic up making the congestion charge seem reasonable, I'd like to see those phasing patterns put back. We are in 2017, cars are not going to go away, lets use technology to help us and not just point fingers and scream tax them. It's not very civilised.

I don't think traffic lights, speed bumps and phasing cause any pollution at all Godfrey. It's the vehicles on the road that do it.

Nice smart Alec reply - got anything useful to contribute?

Do you support my proposal to ration fuel so that every vehicle gets an allowance allowing only 5,000 miles per year ?

Are you serious?

Yes. Ticks all the boxes. Cuts vehicle movement by 50% and therefore congestion. Cuts pointless acceleration and speeding between traffic lights. Encourages use of fuel-efficient vehicles, car sharing and public transport. Nobody has to pay increased taxes and congestion charges which impact on the poor but don't affect the rich. Everybody says there are too many vehicles on the road but this is the only concrete suggestion to reduce them.  What's wrong with it ?
