Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Harringay passage - your views!

Earlier in the year a friends group for the Harringay Passage was formed, to focus on the passage and how it might be improved. We'd like to carry out a short survey of residents to find out what people like and don't like about the passage, how much they use it, and - crucially - what they think might improve it. The council have kindly agreed to help us do this because they are keen to see how much support there is for different initiatives, but before designing the questionnaire it we'd very much like to hear other local people's views so that we can make sure we're asking the right questions.

A couple of us kicked this off yesterday at the play street on Pemberton Road and got some really useful feedback but it would be great to hear what HOL readers think as well. The key things we're interested in at this stage are what people like and don't like about the passage at the moment and what they think would improve it. So, for example:

Positive factors people mentioned yesterday included how convenient it is, the fact that there is no traffic, that it links to two schools etc.
Negative ones were ... drum roll... dog poo, litter and not always feeling safe.
Ideas for making it better included more thorough cleaning, looking at the layout at the road/passage junctions, planters on each street, painting the existing bollards and pipes, and street art.

I think it is frightening to vulnerable people, as I said above, if they see cyclists coming towards them and the cyclists only get off their bike, or swerve at the last minute, then it really is worrying for them as they see them approaching, especially when they can't move quickly. It doesn't matter if they are polite, it's the bicycle that is worrying. If cyclists would have the forethought and decency to get off their bikes as soon as they see anyone approach it would be better all round, it is a narrow space.

I think cyclists should simply stop to allow pedestrians past. Getting off just takes up more space.

By a process of elimination I'm guessing it is me, though I rarely cycle merrily and try very hard to be considerate (yes, even getting off if someone older or with kids is coming).

I've no idea how Alison knows who I am, as I don't know her. I guess that is the downside of having a photo on this site.

Well given recent events in my life I wouldn't recommend using your full name either. While I was unemployed recently and leads just disappeared, I tried googling myself and the fact that I had been issued with a harassment notice came up. It doesn't now that I changed my surname to just Mc.

I think it's a pedestrian walkway and nobody should cycle in it.

I don't mind people cycling as long as they're doing it carefully and considerately. It makes it much easier to deal with the one way system.

Well half of them would still have to cycle some of the way the wrong way to get to the passage.

I've never had problems with cyclists in the passage as they have always alighted and there is a general etiquette of making way for prams and other users etc. My bugbear is the dog let loose to poo unattended from a local street and I wouldn't like to pass it in the confines of the passage and a dog walker, with a large dog on a lead, who doesn't control it adequately.
