Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I walked through H Passage this morning from Fairfax to the next road, towards the Salsibury direction(what is it again?) and was about to enter the passage when a tall man ahead of me stopped in the passage and was looking down and fiddling with something(?) and looked at me as if waiting for me... I therefore turned round and walked out of the passage and waited for a bit, then I peeked round the corner and he had walked a bit further and stopped and was looking in my direction again.... what was he up to and why? Was he lurking? Was he a flasher? Was he up to no good or was it all totally innocent?......... Women have to weigh all this up... I was not about to put myself in the position of being alone in the passage with no one else about, but him lurking there....anyone else see him? I waited for a bit and then looked again and he seemed to have gone.......... so carried on walking through.

Thanks for clarifying your position. I do feel safe walking home at night coming down Green lanes and my road, precisely because there a re lots of people about still, but my walk along H Passage was at 10.30 this morning... I would never walk that way alone at night. Having said that I believe I read somewhere once that most rapes happen around 6-7 in the morning!
I've been in the Bronx and felt safer there actually....
Please Ladies, and anybody else who feels unsafe, post your concerns. We need to know how you feel, and we need to be made aware of possible dangers.

Men get mugged too, and even raped.

Lets hope he just needed a pee.
Every post online like this equates to ten nasty men in the passage in the wild imaginations Harringay residents.

Complain to Gina Adamou or the police, not to HoL. I would rather see local crime statistics produced by the police or the council, not HoL forums.

Apart from that, does anyone think it's something to do with that particular part of the passage? It is different/wider than all the rest and it does have CCTV...
John I think these 'ten nasty men' are lurking in your imagination. You immediately took offence to a women feeling unsafe in the passage. If everyone is honest, we all feel unsafe at some point in a place like the harringay passage both men and women are equal targets in this society, to muggings, rape and other forms of violence why are you pretending otherwise?
Kind of reminds you of how one tragic accident equates to how all car drivers are homicidal maniacs ?
I only mentioned one man, acting somewhat strangely, and I DID NOT imagine him. I don't make a habit of 'wildly imagining' strange men in lone areas, just keeping myself safe and keeping others alert too. A barrister I knew was always seeing men he had convicted of 'flashing' or rape hanging around in the parks near his home where he went walking everyday. And rape stats show that only 2 percent of those charged with rape are convicted.... so the majority get away with it as women can't face putting themselves through the process of a trial. So these guys continue to be out there.... this is not 'wild imagining'.
I did not say that you imagined it! I said that by posting it online you encourage others to feel justified in feeling unsafe in the passage. Perhaps I should just leave my comments at three lines like James', I meant the same thing.

I take offense to us telling one another scary stories about the passage and Harringay in general. You make it LESS safe because you encourage people, with the slightest excuse to:
stay inside
don't go out
buy things
You have my sympathy, and I'm sure you did the right thing. I've had this a couple of times, having to make instant decision about whether to go into the passage behind someone and decided not to. Horrible. It is the downside of the passage - one way in, one way out, no side exits and often nobody else. But I still use it every day, can't imagine getting around without it. And it isn't a problem that's confined to the passage after all.
You did the right thing. I've done it too. Funny how, as you said, women understand exactly how you felt, a few men on here do not. I don't think this is complaining, this is voicing a very real concern. Women ARE more vulnerable than men, it's just a fact, so we have to think slightly differently in order to keep ourselves safe.

I would be very surprised if this post leads to
a. mass hysteria about the passage
b. any improvements.

But now a few women on here knows there may be perv lurking, so we can be extra alert. Thank you, Sapphireblue!
The title of the post is "Harringay passage - is it safe for women?", it is not "There may be a perv hanging about in the passage". I am defending the passage and I am absolutely justified in being pissed off about the title of the post - it goes out in the weekly email to every HoL member.
Well not necessarily in the form it is above. The most answered posts are now grouped together in the Top Topics paragraphs and the title is often changed to fit the prose.

However I think you are over reacting. SB simply asks a question in the title. Opinions seem to differ on this but neither your (nor James') comments make sense in the context of this discussion. You know full well that in an early discussion about the Passage, the majority of the people who answered defended it against gating etc but let us not kid ourselves that it does not attract criminal behaviour from time to time, whether it be people using it as a toilet, as a dustbin, as a place of work for the ladies of the night, as a place to carry out 'business'. Most of this will not directly impact on us i.e. we will become victims and I would certainly urge people to continue to use the Passage and not abandon it to the anti-social. However, suggesting that people are fully aware when they use it is surely simple good sense.

SB has expressed concern over one person, B2 has now confirmed that his missus has also expressed concern to him. SB has not suggested that people don't go out and stay inside (and the 'buy stuff' bit could be construed as a bit of a side swipe at women i.e. we are only interested in shopping- and I know you wouldn't want anyone to think that you were doing that). I for one would not like people to feel that they could not use the forum to get reassurance or support for fears about safety because a couple of people think they are going to make people's fear of crime go up.

Give the users of these forums a little more credit than you are doing now, they are capable of deciding for themselves on these issues, the facts are laid before them in the form of the police newsletters and they can attend RA meetings/Area Assemblies to get even more if they have a mind. I like to believe that people can understand a level of debate above 'stay inside, don't go out, buy things'

New or infrequent posters may actually feel quite pissed off, as you put it. themselves that you are appearing to make light of their thread and as regular contributors our job should be to offer encouragement and a decent level of conversation. If people feel attacked or trivialised they may not come back and I know that you for one, John, would hate for that to be the case.
