Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Harringay Food Festival
Hi,
I've recently moved to the area and have found out that this festival ran in 2009 and 2011. What happened? It seems to have died a death!

It was held over due to regeneration works. It was due to run again, but I think it took so much time for the organisers I think there's a reluctance to commit again. Both years were hugely successful though.

Hi Pav, the festival that never was ( was supposed to have been last September) had a funding gap, I was tasked with raising £25,000 through crowd funding to fill the hole. The crowd funding campaign never went live as the decision to pull the festival was taken before it was posted on line. I still think this sum would have been easily achievable - 2500 people putting in £10 would have sorted it. As a dad of two I've spent more a lot more than that on a day out for the family and returned home disappointed. So a tenner seemed pretty good value for a day out on the lanes.
The problem, IF the organisers could be persuaded to dust down the plans, is that so many more funding streams have gone and are unlikely to ever return. So this one, if people wanted something on the same scale (which is a big question in itself) would need a much greater level of voluntary donations if it were ever to get off the ground.
The funds would also need to be in place before any approaches to council, London transport, were made( no one is going to put in the effort without knowing it could all be paid for)
So - the big question is - could a really serious amount of money be raised from voluntary donations for this festival???
I have no idea how much would be needed without talking to the organisers but I would guess North of £60,000 -- so 6-7000 people in for a tenner!???
If enough people thought it was possible I'd go stir the pot again and see if the organisers could be persuaded - but they would really need a lot of persuading .
So - What does everyone think?
Give it a go or let it lie and let it all drift into lanes folk-law?

Andy this is excellent stuff. I have our tickets, we can leave as soon as you get the money.
What about the £400 per pitch for the market traders? Think that's going to be too trickey to get hold of before the festival? Nobody will miss £10 but who would be expecting the pitch fees?

Great stuff Andy. What about some form of match funding? So if crowd funding pulled in 20k, the Traders' Association and LB Haringey match it getting the 60k. I'm happy to put £10 in the pot to get it rolling

I'm assuming that the GL traders would be funding on top of the figure I've guessed at. And match funding from LB harringay ( I'm guessing again) I think would be a no no given that all councils will be cutting and cutting hard after the election - whoever won. They could however lend support in levering cleaning services fromViola and negotiating with other boroughs, police, TFL etc. - trust me, no one is gonna close Green Lanes for a Day without all the above on board.
As for pitch prices - I have no idea . But I'm sure the organisers would need all of that as well - this sort of thing just ain't cheap.
I have no idea what the cost of the first two festivals was but I'm pretty sure £60,000 or so just wouldn't go very far. So squeezing funding out of Big Bad Boris would also be necessary. That's why to go to the organisers, you'd really need to show that the festival had SERIOUS local popular support and that would mean big money.
That's why maybe it's better to stay with the smaller ( but no less beautiful) block party!

There is going to be a food festival in Myddleton Road N22 on 28 June, coinciding with the Bowes Park summer market - not quite as huge as the Green Lanes festival that was, but please do come along and support it!

There's a basic problem when Haringey is incapable of getting the basics right.
You can see this clearly along West Green Road when they've used Mayoral cash for a cosmetic paint-job on a few shopfronts. Good for them - if unfair on all the rest. But any improved kerb appeal is soon undermined by:
♫♪ 76 rubbish bags in a big parade. With rows 'n' rows of pongy garbage odours. ♫♪

The inHOUSE Festival is back..
There's also some nice events happening nearby including The Devil Himself, an immersive theatre event just off Eade Road.
