Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

An item at tonight's Council Cabinet meeting has thrown into question the future survival of Haringey's two warehouse districts and the artistic communities who live in them.

Both the Harringay Warehouse District and the Fountayne Road community now face an uncertain future following the publication of a Haringey Council report, "Tackling Unauthorised Living in Industrial Areas". (Report attached)

The report, which was discussed at the full cabinet of the Council today, recommends a two-year project costing £600,000 which will seek to deal with "the growing problem of unauthorised residential and live work uses in and around (the) Industrial Sites" in Haringey. The recommended process is "to establish a special multi-disciplinary team to fully investigate and address the problem through a combination of regulation, improvement, enforcement and, where necessary, prosecution".

The alarm bells were ringing for me since earlier in the week I had discovered that these areas are earmarked as being amongst those that will "will accommodate the majority of development in the borough over the next 20 years".

In Facebook and Twitter conversations this afternoon, warehouse residents shared their fears that the vibrancy their communities bring to the borough will be overlooked and their communities sanitised and destroyed.

In response to my Twitter requests to Council Leader Claire Kober this evening to protect these communities, Cllr Kober sought to offer some reassurance:

@harringayonline some people in unacceptable conditions. My concern is for safe, decent properties. No intention to undermine communities

@harringayonline no intention to damage what's good. Priority is to go after rogue landlords just as we do elsewhere in borough

When I asked if she would ensure that warehouse residents will be involved, the Council Leader replied:

@harringayonline don't see any problem involving residents. Will ask officers to consider how best to achieve

I very much hope that the approach the Council takes in this project will support these communities rather than beginning the process of whittling them away.

Jenny you are spreading malicious rumours , and misinformation , I reserve my rights to take legal action against you if you persist .
You clearly did not live opposite Omega Works prior to 2007 , when it was owned by Oak Forest Properties ? The yard and main road was constantly littered with rubbish and the place was an absolute tip .

Who are the Landlord's for the residential houses in Hermitage Road , open your eyes most of the street is covered with fly tipping and rubbish .

As you are well aware there has been very limited noise disturbance at Omega Works for a long time .Are you so naive, to think if this was a sanitised housing estate that there would not be issues with noise and parties ?
I pay Veolia in access of £100 per month for refuse collection for Units 10A-D ,despite the fact that it is the Council's responsibility to legally collect refuse from 10B , this Unit is registered for Council Tax .
When you meet Councillor Goldberg , ask him why the refuse department at Haringey is denying the legal rights to residents at Omega Works for refuse collection .
They have ignored all letters that I have sent to their various departments since 2002 .

I have all your slanderous emails and text's .
The large majority of Tenants at Omega works want to live their lives in peace and harmony and have much to offer the whole local community .

Address your complaints relating to all units at Omega Works other than 10A-D to David Meir dm@noblegift.co.uk ,Mike Lock mike@topfling.co.uk and martin@topfling.co.uk .

10A-D Omega Works is land locked the yard belonging to the paymaster 's of the aforementioned .

Your facts and information are completely incorrect , the majority of Tenants at Omega Works have equal right's to you ?
This sort of arrogance and disregard for your neighbours is not helpful at all. She is talking about her personal experiences and is obviously at the end of her tether. I recall talking to Jenny at least r maybe 4 years ago about the problems she was having at night with the noise. She said there was a party just last weekend. Isn't that true? What about the industrial light?
It is further arrogance to consider that one's interest are more important than another's . Jenny knows who the Landlord's are for the 55k sq ft of Omega that are causing her nuisance .

What attempts has she made to contact them ? Jenny I invite you to copy and paste the email complaints that you have sent to all parties concerned and your text messages , including the one's you have sent to me ?

Also proof that you have contacted the noise abatement officer ? The refuse department and Councillor Kober .

am pleased to say things have moved along, and be interested to know whether things are beginning to improve. The result of our activity has led to a new Cabinet decision to bring in more resource to tackle the issue. I have attached a link below, and the item is the first on the agenda so you can see the action we are taking and why we are taking it. I have asked officers to come back to you with a full response but as I have said I don't expect progress to be instant, and as a first step we are trying to establish the full scale of the response.

If you have any specific issues that I can pick up or that you want me to chase (e.g. uncollected refuse, noise) please do let me know and I will chase up. I do hope the decision goes some way to assure you we are now getting action and developing a policy to tackle the issue.

All the best

Thank you for sending through the queries vis-a-vis the building of the staircase. You will see that officers are now responding more swiftly and in a more co-ordinated manner on the property. I will say that it is not a case that the Council can simply evict tenants of this nature, and the briefing I have been given which I have attached outlines the action that officers have taken and an idea of what next steps are in train.

The immediate need is to find a means to tackle the noise nuisance which is causing so much distress to you and to many residents in both Hermitage Road and Finsbury Park Avenue.

I am also pleased to see officers confirm that the site is being prioritised for action, and in particular that we are seeking to secure police support in the matter. This is key because if successful it will enable the team to seize equipment which both brings an immediate cessation to the nuisance and acts as a future deterrent.

I will update you as and when I receive more information, but in the meantime I hope this gives you confidence that as ward councillors we are making the representations to officers to get appropriate action taken to alleviate this menace.

In the meantime please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can be of any further assistance but do hope this weekend passes more peacefully for you.

All my best

Jenny
See below. I know it's a lot to ask but I have pushed to get this listed as a priority site. If you are suffering please please call so we can record the incident and intervene. I believe we are on the way to solving this situation but we do need residents to let us know when something is happenning.
I hope your weekend passes peacefully but if not please do get in touch

Joe Goldberg

TWO of the emails I have recieved..There are far too many to copy and paste.

I have also spoken to the owners of the right hand side of the warehouses.

I have copied and pastwed an email from Cllr Goldberg below

I

No parties in any of my units 10A-D Omega Works?

If you're going to go all gung ho with threats of legal action against a private person on HoL for no reason other than you want them to shut up then you could at least do the people who have to read it a favour and use a spell checker. The odd question mark in the right place would be nice too.

No reasonable reader is taking 100% of what is written on this thread as fact and you have and are using your right of reply. Why resort to legal threats?

I think the acknowledgement that apart from 10B the other Omega Works units don't pay council tax is... dynamite. Personally I would delete it if I were you (Lawyered up and all).

Most disturbing to read J's post on such a clement day too.

I pay substantial business rates Units 10 A/C/D .

The Council know that these units have been used as dwelling houses for longer than 5 years and are therefore immune from the current enforcement notice. They will not allow these unit's to be re rated for Council tax , pending the Public Inquiry.

I am sue your can check the revenue being paid by my Unit's, from the Council .

I believe in the democratic principle and complete transparency. Jenny can say what she likes however under the current law of the land , I have the right to defend myself against slander and liable .

Misinformation is being spread to enable Haringey Council and there preferred developer's  to bull doze Omega Works , to make way for social housing .

I do not have to apologise  to you or anyone else for my dyslexia .

Instead of your pomposity ,perhaps you might concentrate on the issue at hand . Any and all information relating to the Planning Enforcement Notice appeals and rebuttals should be available for Public viewing on Haringey's Planning Portal.

If you cannot view the information , ask Claire Kober  claire.kober@haringey.gov.uk

It is her responsibility as leader to keep Haringey Resident's informed . When you contact her ask her why rate payers monies are being wasted in this manner .

One small point, I very much doubt there will be any social housing being built if the site is bulldozed. Apart from the 100 council-owned homes being planned for the whole borough (as we're informed by Cllr Strickland) all these new builds be will private sale, with a smattering of 'affordable' ie shared ownership, at near market prices.

Paul Simon Homes ( Michael Brothers ) , have been trying to buy Units 10A-D Omega since 2005 , from me . Their associated Company Magic Homes Ltd has a new division called Magic Students .

They are currently offering accomodation in

Grove Park Road, London, N15

Grove Park Road was recently refurbished and now contains 5 double bedrooms each with their own en-suite shower room, a spacious living area, kitchen and breakfast room with all mod cons and a large shared bathroom. The property also boosts a courtyard garden.

The property is fully furnished throughout. All bedrooms contain a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside table and your own flat screen TV. The living room has two sofas, a coffee table and a large plasma TV.

The property is situated perfectly in the heart of North London only a 1 minute walk from Seven Sisters Tube Station, which has a direct line into King’s Cross St Pancras, Euston and Oxford Circus which is only 6 stops away. There are also good bus links directly to the surrounding areas of Holloway, Haringey, Wood Green, Enfield Town, Tottenham and beyond. The development is situated within walking distances of good local amenities including a variety of shops, an array of restaurants and many pubs and bars. The development has good transport links to most universities within North and Central London.
Magic Students is an upfront and honest company who own, manage and maintain all of our own properties to the highest possible standards. We do not deal with managing agents so if something does go wrong as small as it might be, you can be sure it will rectified directly by us, promptly and with the least possible hassle and upheaval to you.

So any arguments relating to Landlords profiteering in Manor House Warehouses is nonsense .. Magic Students Ltd (Paul Simon Homes/ Michael Bros ) receiving £33800.00 . This property is much smaller than the Units at 10 B/C/D Omega which are 1600 sq ft each.

Government grants have been given to property developers to provide Student accommodation .

As they are so keen to buy my site , local residents could end up with 330 Students at Omega Works , instead of young professionals.

My Tenants are mostly in their late 20's-mid 30's .. Professions , a local Teacher, Architect, Restaurant Chain Manager , Interior Designer/Builder , Documentary Maker , Business Manager of a Luxury Shoe Brand , Cheif Graphic Designer for a Top Agency , Two fully employed Photographer's, Journalist,Photography Agent ,Artist, Musician , Advertising Agency Creative and a Mathematician.
