Haringey Launch Scheme for Dedicated Parking Spaces for Disabled Residents

Haringey Council recently launched its new dedicated disabled parking bay policy, which ensures that Blue Badge holders get full use of the bays they have requested either outside their homes or offices.

This new policy ensures that applicants requesting a dedicated parking bay are now assessed on a medical needs basis.

As of August of last year, Haringey residents with ‘hidden disabilities’ can also apply for a Blue Badge and a dedicated parking bay as well.

Disabilities that might not need obvious mobility aids such as sticks, walkers or chairs but that can affect people's abilities to walk such as arthritis, dementia, brain injuries, Parkinson's and severe mental health problems. I'm sure there are others.

The Department of Transport extended the scheme last year and the criteria include

  • People who cannot travel without risk of serious harm to their health and safety or someone else's (such as young children with autism)
  • People who cannot travel without "very considerable psychological distress"
  • People who have very considerable difficulty when walking, meaning "both the physical act and experience of walking"

This is a long awaited policy and very welcome indeed.
