Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Robberies on buses increased in most London boroughs in 2019. But Enfield and Haringey now get the top spot in the robberies on buses league.

Whilst that is of concern and good cause to take care, the number of robberies in a year still totals only just over 40 in each borough.

Below are the crime stats for buses in Haringey, courtesy of TfL.

I got on the 144 at Turnpike Lane this afternoon. Four young men got on at the Wightman Rd stop. They all strolled nonchalantly, without paying, past the driver who seemed unconcerned and drove on...

I think it’s a really difficult call for drivers in situations like that.  They can stop the bus and tell the blokes to come back and pay, ask for back up and and remain where they are until it arrives or get out of their cab and confront four blokes alone.   I was on a 341 a couple of weeks ago where someone did exactly what you described.  The driver used the PA system to tell them they she was stopping the bus until they came back and paid and after a few minutes ended up getting verbally abused by another passenger who took objection to the bus not moving.  They can’t really win!

I did see an excellent technique employed by a revenue inspector a bus once.  She came up to the top deck to scan cards.  A young bloke pretended to be asleep when she approached him.  She loudly asked him to wake up and show his card.  After he hadn't responded on about the sixth time of her asking she said (loudly) that as she was concerned that he might be unconscious she was going to stop the bus and call an ambulance.  He “woke up” and sheepishly admitted that he hadn’t paid.  Cue scattered applause on the top deck.

To put the numbers in context, there are 1.8 billion passenger journeys per year in London on 8,000 individual buses covering 700 different routes..  Your chance of being a victim of crime on a bus is tiny.

Unfortunately happened to us. The classic block and distraction method - along with them being confident and super quick. They blocked our view of the buggy bag for 5 seconds - and when we got home - went to the buggy bag and my wife's wallet was missing. My son was asleep in the buggy at the time too.

Crime under the Tories....skyrocketing.

Cut the police force, then blame everyone else before proposing to reinstate police numbers in order to solve the problem.

Yet people will fall for the ploy!

Yes, but they would be caught before they commit another one.
