Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Bathe in the new bright LED street lights of Hampden Rd next time your passing through. Stand under one and you could be forgiven for thinking you're on the set of the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, just don't look up for you'll be blinded by the light (rather than beamed up).

Seriously though these lights are awful!!

I've just requested a 'shroud' via online form. Has anyone managed to get one fitted yet?

Hardly a 'shroud' but yes the one we requested was fitted recently. It's about 2 inches dropping down from the lamp, effectively blocking the outsider row of lights. There are 3 rows. It works OK. We only had a auto email to our request.

The new LED street lights have arrived in our street too near Downhills Park. So bright everyone is complaining and the birds don't stop tweeting all night long thinking its daylight. Don't the council consult residents before they install them?

It's amusing to see how many of the upstairs flats in my street have suddenly installed blackout blinds as a result. You can apply to have a shade fitted if you're directly dazzled by it - worth a shot?

Hello Matt and Maddy, would you please tell me where to find the form for requesting shrouds for new street lamps. Our whole area is annoyed at the glaring light now. Some neighbours are threatening sabotage.

Hi Matt,

Apologies for the tardy reply...

The 'shrouds' have been installed - a few weeks ago now.  I'd classify them as 'OK'.  They seem to reduce some of the light to the first floor (bedroom) but they still flood the ground floor with excess light.  At least I can sleep at night now.

Bottom line is that they were poorly specified in the first place - the lights are fixed and don't reflect (no pun intended) the variations of road inclination or lamp post angle (leaning backward).  I'm sorry to say that it is lazy and sadly typical procurement by Harringay that has seen this design deployed across the area without an opportunity to test, learn and revise the product.

I think that eventually almost every lamp will have a shroud fitted (and so they should) and it will cost the council time money and effort that could have been avoided.

And while I am ranting (I'm not actually although it might seem that I am), I never heard back from either of the two councillors who promised to investigate the issue at the council.

I'll just keep paying the (significant) council tax, buy some thicker curtains and disengage from local representation again ;-)

Well, it seems that the Traffic Survey is coming a little unstuck as well so maybe there's a theme running with that lot at Station Rd Towers. It does seem odd that as they slash the number of workers that some of the savings aren't going into reducing council tax, as has been done at Hammersmith & Fulham. Maybe Haringey council tax payers will wake up one day ...

Pat, you go to the council's 'Report a Problem' page;
