Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All,

You will hopefully have seen a letter from us come through your doors last week on the subject of grit bins in our ward. We'd like to give this as much airtime as possible while winter is still fresh in peoples' minds.

Letter copied below:

We appreciate that returning a slip of paper at the bottom of a leaflet is not everyone’s cup of tea, so we’d like to open up the issue on this website as well.

If you feel your road needs a grit bin installed please say so below, giving your name and the name of your road. If you would prefer to give us this information privately we can be contacted individually as follows:

Cllr. Karen Alexander karen.alexander.haringeylibdems@googlemail.com

David Schmitz info@davidschmitz.org.uk

Chris Ford chris.ford@haringeylibdems.org

In lobbying the Council for these bins we need to demonstrate that we all want them, so please take the time to put in a request – it only takes a second.

Thanks,

Chris Ford

Due to the massive potholes there is now plenty of grit on the roads of Harringay.
John, If you want to make us aware of a pothole on your road you can either just tell us or e-mail pothole@haringeylibdems.org

Although I have to say, for a change the council seem to be putting together a pretty coordinated response to the pothole problem across the borough.

Anyway. Grit bins....
You're right, I'm such a selfish pr*ck I'd only think of my own road. I was actually talking about Hewitt Rd (I get around a bit) and being cheeky. I think if existing laws on acceptable tonnage for using a Ladder Rd as a short cut were enforced we would not have such a huge pot hole problem.

As for grit bins... silk purse... that I don't want to pay for.
You're likely to only get a couple overall - top of Mattison and some other alpine stretch perhaps. Not that I have any inside knowledge.
Personally I'm all for one on the new river as that's a really treacherous stretch when it gets icy...
You're likely to only get a couple overall

Frank, although you claim not to have any inside knowledge, you seem to be confident about what is going to happen with grit bins and want to share that opinion publicly. I now understand at least some of the reasoning why the council forbids ordinary employees from press contact.

You've already admitted to working for the council. Plus, not in the field of council PR, which is all too apparent. Are you trying to remind the public, candidates and our councillors, who's really boss in the council?

Don't you reckon that what you say gives the appearance of pre-empting decisions and discussion which is properly made by our elected representatives?

.
I may well be wrong, and I definitely don't have inside info because the decisions haven't been made yet. It's just a wild guess - the council is skint, there are dozens of roads on hills in the boro that don't have grit bins.
Don't worry, if I ever do have any really good stuff I won't share it with you because after all, information is power.
Vote for me - I run the council (secretely, undemocratically and much to the chagrin of the humourless)
Glad you can find humour in the current situation Frank. I just don't have the wit to come up with statements like "I just think most of you are too far up your own eliminative organs"

It'd be great if the council could get the basics right. Like grit bins.

Then they could boast about the numbers of grit bins in the costly Haringey People publication.
Request one , Are you having a laugh !
WE ARE ALL ENTITLED TO HAVE THEM !!!
After this years lack of gritting ,i could not work for a week because Beresford was to dangerous to get the car out ,and i use the car for business and cannot use public transport as i carry heavy equipment. I am still seething.
But even without working don't worry your tax will on your doorstep next month
Sorry to hear about the problems to your business with the road conditions. but don't let's give Chris a hard time about this. He standing as a candidate. He's had no control over road gritting or bins.
The argument that the provision of grit bins would be a major budgetory issue was voiced by a Labour candidate at our last Area Assembly and one which I personally do not buy.

Grit bins are not expensive. But more importantly they are an issue of safety and absolutely necessary. Stuart's frustration/anger is absolutely justified and I think is a sentiment many of us who live on steep ladder roads share. We are, indeed, entitled to them.

I think we can all appreciate that in extreme weather conditions council services (and grit) will be stretched. But at least if the grit bins are there we, as residents, can do our bit to alleviate the problem without having to purchase salt and sand from Jewsons and cart it home ourselves.
We bought it from Sainsbury's.

Ok Chris, how much do they cost? Per annum.

Perhaps a further levy on street parking would be a fair way if paying for it...
Another way to pay for more grit bins would be to slash waste. The inflated PR budget – including the propagandist HP magazine – could be cut dramatically to advantage. Grit bins would be a relatively minor one-off cost, while slashing Haringey People printing would be the gift that goes on giving, year after year.
