My god, It's taken several hours for me to get my confirmation email through. In the five minutes since my first screen shot:

2 minutes later:

...and there's a fascinating map, showing where the signtaures are being submitted from.

So many are signing up that the site is crashing according to the Indie.

This petition was begun last month in an attempt to change the referendum rules prior to the vote. Whilst it may be a useful barometer of the reaction of sone of the public, it is unlikely to do more than inform the thinking of some MPs. As I understand it, really only a general election fought and won on challenging where we are today, has the potential to force any change.

It was, but my understanding is that it would be very unlikely for MPs to vote to throw out any legislation without a new parliament first having received a mandate so to do.

"The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered" Cameron.

To be clear, I think the result is bad/very bad for London and wish it hadn't happened.
However, these petitions will simply confirm the provinces' prejudices against the 'metropolitan elite', which includes you and me dear reader!

If taken literally they would condemn us to decades of 'neverendums' and civil strife.I hope it's just part of the grieving process and people come to their senses in a week or two!

Referendums/referenda are the wrong way to come to complex decisions like this. While they may be OK for deciding if you want tea or coffee, there were too many real options for a simple yes/no vote on an issue like this. I'm certain some people voted In despite feeling that the EU is flawed but better than the alternative and some people who voted Out because they don't want government from Brussels but would want to keep the borders open - plus a hundred other options.

I would have much preferred to see the parties taking a stance on it, let the electorate know what they saw as the future for the country being in or out, and then to hold a general election based on their plans for that. As it is we had a sound bite referendum and never really got beyond name calling.

Is there no way for the public to receive recourse when lies are knowingly spread in such campaigns?

If Johnson's battlebus had been a Cornflake packet making such claims, it would be illegal.

Stephen the entire campaign was apauling, on both sides. From someone on the Remain side more or less warning of another European war if we left to the In side making promises they simply cannot keep about an amount of money (that we never really got to the truth of how much it was) that would be spent on the NHS if we came out.

I think bringing in Obama to say that the UK would have to go to the back of queue on trade negotiations with the USA was a massive own goal. People don't like veiled threats.

Totally agree. I have signed it.

Wow! nearly 800,000 signatures! This petition is really gaining momentum
