For quality and longevity, at a reasonable price, look for well made second hand furniture. You may find something that needs rubbing down and re-oiling or varnishing; the work will make you love it more!
I'm writing from the experience of a furniture maker.

Somewhere in the Chocolate Factory? Lots of small artisan workers there.
We have bought a few bits from parlourroominteriors.com and have been really happy with the service and prices! Would highly recommend.
Also Home Sense at Staples Corner has good qulaity furniture at good prices.
We bought our oak chest of drawers from Criterion in Islington - they only cost about £120. We stripped it back and some of the wood on the drawers was a bit far gone, but we just painted the drawer front white and it looks great.
We've also bought some lovely furniture from Of Special Interest in Crouch End. They do old and new stuff, I think it's reasonably priced, but it's not cheap. Everything we've bought from there lasts really well and the old stuff especially is solid because it was built to last.
