Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Good news for Harringay – Play streets to be expanded across borough
After the success of this year’s pilot on Pemberton Road, the council will next week formally implement Play Streets across Haringey.
For those who haven’t got involved before, it means that subsequent to the agreement of local residents, a road can be closed to traffic for a few hours at the weekend to allow children to have fun on the street and generally to allow people to mingle safely outside.
More details are in the council’s cabinet report.
Some of the points -
- Should be cost free – charges are being waived.
- It won’t be run by the council, but by local residents.
- There is a list on the website of which roads can not be considered for Play Streets. (Like principle roads, or roads without viable diversions.)
- As it says in the report, applications for particular streets must have majority support from those in the road.
- Organisers will be advised to get public liability insurance, though it won’t be mandatory
- Details of how Play Streets can be applied for locally will be on the council’s website
- Of course, there is a Play street event this Sunday on Pemberton Road, between 12.30-3.30 (15th). People are being asked to bring mince pies and mulled wine!

The first two streets were in St. Ann's, pioneered by local residents and supported very actively by Nilgun and me. So I'm delighted the Council is fully endorsing the project and waiving all fees as indeed it should.
Children have a right to play out and that's something which has been denied to them for too long.Zena Brabazon

That's good to hear.
I remember the street party on Falkland Road a few years ago which was organised by NHP, Friends of Fairland Park et al which was huge success - for all age groups, and in particular our older residents who had a chance to catch up with neighbours new and old, talk to parents of children who were currently at NHP etc.

Well, Wightman Road is not a principal (but is a very principled and residential) road with eminently viable diversions via adjacent A-roads. Like John D, my northern neighbour, I look forward to the swish of skipping ropes, the hopping of scotch youngsters, the ringing rings of roses, the bouncing of india-rubber balls, the crack of willow and clash of ash as cricket and hurling vie for space on our few level stretches, while marble aces level their best eye to the tarmac to steady their aim. We shall, naturally, be entering Wightman Road as the World's Longest Play Street in the Guinness Book of Records - but first we must ensure lots of playing space for the Myriad Childish Games beloved of New Labour and Lib Dem Election Candidates who believe they have invented all playable games for Teams of Three from Pothole Patching, to Rogue Landlord Catching, to Play Street Expanding and, especially, Quadrennial Grandstanding. Emina, we hope you will help declare our Play Street open with a no-holds-barred All-in-Wrestling bout with our local Champion, Karen.

This is great news! Looking forward to getting more information after the cabinet decision next week. Meanwhile, people interested in play streets may be interested in joining the Haringey Playing Out Facebook group, which has just started. As interest grows, there will doubtless be lots of questions/ideas/experiences about setting and running play a play street in Haringey.

Great news. Really good to have the excellent work of everyone involved with the Avondale and Clarendon roads play streets over this last 8 months recognised. It really is a great scheme.
And now that Justin and co. have shown how effective it can be on Pemberton Road too - hopefully others will start organising sessions for their own roads. Good too that the council are being supportive and waiving the admin costs - every little helps!
