In my perambulations around Harringay and its environs, I do like to have a peek in people's front gardens.
While I accept that many people settle for a bit of a concrete and a few bins, there are still a lot of folk who make the most of their little patch out the front whether it be pretty window boxes, a few pots or full on trees and shrubs. As Spring begins to fade out and the summer season approaches, Harringay gets greener and prettier and its all thanks to you keen (front) gardeners out there.
Today's walk took me up Burgoyne Road where I couldn't fail to notice how many of the front gardens as I walked up from the Passage had pretty rose bushes in them.
Of course, I couldn't resist snapping a few pics as I passed.
And a special mention to whoever the lovely person is who is maintaining a tree pit garden at the bottom of a little silver birch. It is very much appreciated.

I've got big plans for our concrete wasteland. But does anyone know if one is allowed to simply invade the (miserable, grubby) bit of pavement outside one's house? I'd love to set up a planter on the corner, bring a bit of colour and even ward off the fly tippers, and there's plenty of space for it. But do you need the council's permission?
Yes you do and it’s a right faff to get it (they’ll probably remove an unauthorised one if they notice it) but if you can get your local councillor onside it might help. It’s highways and they are not very open to new ideas or residents doing their own thing (speaking from bitter experience). However, as I said, get a sympathetic councillor onside and who knows? Tree pits gardens are usually tolerated though.
From here "for the 2016/17 year, local authorities in England dealt with around 1 million (1,002,000) fly-tipping incidents, a 7% increase from the previous year. ...Local authorities carried out a total of 1,571 prosecutions for fly-tipping offences in England in 2016/17, a decrease of 25% on 2015/16.
So what about Haringey?
How many fly-tipping problems have been reported during the financial years 2016-2017 and 2015-2016 (with a breakdown of their location if possible)? Financial year:- 2016-17, - 20,222 so far incidents
of fly tipping and Financial year:- 2015-16, - 34975 fly tip reports. Breakdown by location is not available.
How many fines for fly-tipping have been issued in the financial years 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, with location if possible? No fines issue for Financial Year:- 2015/2016 and 72 fines issued for Financial year:- 2016/2017 (at Oct 2016).
Odds are pretty good for your planter, Dan.
Odds against prosecution look good, but the chances of confiscation must be quite high. Thanks for the reality check, I'll concentrate on the front yard first anyway
Dan, Liz and others around the Ladder (The Friends of the Harringay Passage) have been guerrilla gardening many of the raised beds across the Ladder for years. We have a tacit agreement from the council to continue to do so. We put some planters in on Falkland Road a year or more ago and the council got their knickers in a twist about them.
That said, they cannot simply remove them (ie your proposed planters) without first engaging with you, so you may decide you want to give it a go and see what they do about it. Hopefully they are to busy dealing with pot-hole filling requests...
If you do go down this route though please do think carefully about what you put and where. Talk to your neighbors first, and *make sure it is safe*!!!
I'd love to green up our front garden but it's on Wightman, on the train track side and the whole thing has been concreted in to the height of the top of the wall. So a) much hauling of bins and b) super, super exposed patch - windy, lots of car fumes - where everything I've tried to grow has died (admittedly some thing less quickly than others). Can anyone recommend something that might survive, in a pot?
Great to see someone planting the tree pit; let's all join them with the street trees in our street! a box of bizzies is all it takes...
