Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is anyone else's cat being terrorised by foxes?

Our cat was cornered by a young fox in the garden the other morning, and now he's nervous about going out on his own.  He's 17, so not as confident as he used to be, but I'd still prefer him to be comfortable going out into his own garden.

The fox appeared again this morning, asleep on the garden shed.

Does anyone know of any anti-fox remedies?

I dont know if this is true but someone told me that foxes wont bother going into a garden that is someone else's territory (eg another fox) particularly if the other fox has marked their territory with pee. As it is unlikely that you have access to lots of spare fox pee, the advice I got was to get a dog or human to pee around the edges of the garden to establish an 'active' territory. Might be worth a go!

Sorry your cat is being bullied. My cat gets bullied by other cats which is not as scary as foxes but I sympathise as I hate seeing her sitting nervously by the cat flap.

Good luck!

We have a foxes' den at the bottom of our garden, and we have two methods which seem to keep our garden and our cat pretty much intact:

1. Every so often, take a pee in various parts of the garden (obviously not where you're growing veg). As pipplypig says, you're basically marking territory, and it tends to frighten them off.

2. Feed them. Controversial, I know, but most of the time, the reason why foxes do the damage they're infamous for is, very simply, they're hungry. Rifling through bins and digging up flower beds is not the behaviour of well-fed creatures. If you have any old bones or meat gone off, just stick it at the back of the garden - they'll eat it, they've got stomachs like goats'.

Like I say - it's worked for us.

I have also heard that male pee is a very good deterrent

Yep. It's likely to contain testosterone. But I think they're scared of human pee whether male or female.

Many thanks for all your advice & suggestions, including the ones involving, er "human waste"...
