Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Anyone else suffering at the moment with this problem? We have been fighting a losing battle with them in our garden. We can't keep them out, despite putting up barriers (they have dug under the fence.) They seem to have no fear, and if you confront them just retreat to a fence and wait. We have had to put up with fox poo in the garden every day, the remains of their meals on the lawn, shoes and toys left out are taken and chewed, bird feeders taken, pots and plants knocked over and destroyed and - this is the final straw! - decapitated our one and only sunflower.... It was unsupported so the head was near the ground. It was intact in the morning but by early afternoon the head was at the other end of the garden bitten in half. I can't imagine a cat or a squirrel could have done that, so the atrocity must have been a fox, and, worryingly, in the middle of the day.

Also been seen rolling around on the lawn, like a family pet. I'm beginning to get a bit worried about leaving the children (1 and 5) in the garden, and having seen one wonder into next door's kitchen, need to think about having the kitchen door closed.

I've seen from other threads that the council won't do anything about foxes but I am going to complain and ask as I think it is becoming a risk. Don't think I should have to keep my doors closed!  If anyone else is suffering the same level of problem maybe you could think about letting the council know too?

The council are useless. Maybe a petition and letter to local MP?

It's a massive problem on the Ladder, where I live.

Good idea. I'll see what the council come back with and then take it from there. Our ward councillor has also been extremely helpful with another issue so I may try her too.  When we were on the ladder we  had them but not to the same level as now (Glenwood Rd)

I'd support any initiative to cull them (I'd probably even ride in one of Boris Johnson's fantasy London fox hunts).

Let me know how you get on.

We live in the middle of a big city, however annoying they can be it kind of comes with the territory. The foxes in our garden are scared away when I open the back door and I've witnessed my three cats chase them off. I've never felt in danger from a fox nor has any of my cats..

The foxes are scared of my cats too! I only see foxes at night, not during the day. A fox took my husband's shoe once, and brought it back months later on his birthday, which was really funny! It's a good idea to put bird feeders on poles. Sometimes there's fox poo to clear away or a damaged plant, but that's wildlife, I like foxes.

For posting that link, Stan, I forgive you everything

We have then too. One came right up to our back door the other night and we have a big dog and a 'have a go' cat.
Personally with all the refuse spilling out from bi weekly collections I think the city is becoming every foxes dream location.
We have four young foxes who regularly cavort in our garden. Yes, they dig around, which is annoying, but they, as a species, were here before we were so some kind coexistence is surely how to deal with this. Don't leave anything edible they can get at. If your neighbours do it's not the fault of the foxes, it's the fault of the neighbours. Attacks by foxes on humans are incredibly rare. If you make the place less attractive they will lose interest. As scavengers, think what the might like to scavenge and get rid of it. Far more people are hurt by dogs than foxes.
My neighbours feed the fox's steak. Weird because they also shoot squirrels with a sling shot thing ( but have a terrible aim) and reserve the upper most animosity for cats. Their take is that squirrels and cats are genocidal to the birds so they support the foxes who take out the odd kitten and squirrel whenever they have half a chance.

its possible they have a point, given that UK cats kill about 55 million birds a year ( and another 200 million non winged creatures ) and give us toxoplasmosis possibly causing a range of mental health problems as well as miscarriages all through their ever well positioned shit.

Perhaps - we should be wagging our fingers else where ?

FYI....I have worked in mental health for the past 11 years and have yet to meet someone who has had their mental health affected by toxoplasmosis. Seems a rare association to me. Also I did a lot of research on toxoplasmosis from cats affecting pregnancies and the association is minimal/negligible. However I will agree with your point about cats causing havoc with local wildlife.

Foxes are a nuisance because they did up plants imho.

It's way too early to scientifically rule it in or out conclusively but it does look like the very same virus that controls the mouse nervous system, can effect ours badly ...

I would argue that this is too reductionistic to be clinically useful... or something for cat owners to be worried about.
