Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi there all

We have just moved into a property in Lausanne Road and were informed (before we moved in) that in the last couple of weeks there have been foxes coming into the property overnight.

I had not seen them until last night (midnight).  With all the lights off, I was watching the garden and saw at least 6 baby foxes and what looked to be 1 large parent (possibly mother fox).

They have been causing a right mess, knocking over all our pot plants, taken shoes and digging up our vegetable garden.  I have been very careful to not leave any food or rubbish outside but they still come into the yard.

I covered up all the holes in the fence however they are now coming over the top.  I tried the old chilli powder trick and that worked for a couple of days and now I am about to invest in one of these:

Has anyone else seen these foxes and worked out how to keep them out of the property?

I am in the gardens and we are having lots of activity. We never had problems before. It could be that they could smell the rabbit that used to be housed next door in a rabbit hutch in the garden. Anyhow I woke up this morning to see that a bag of peat/soil I had left in the garden which I had covered with an extra iceland bag had been dragged over in front of my back door. The fox/foxes then managed to break the bag of soil and empty all the contents outside my back door. Every morning I wake up to see some kind of debris in my garden. I have to say if I fall asleep at night I haven't been woken by the foxes so far but I look forward to when things start to calm down.

So just another update on the effectiveness of the scarecrow.

Its been about 3 days now and no sign of the furry friends and their teddy bears, shoes, chicken boxes, and general other waste that they used to bring over every day.

After a bit of placement testing I think I have found the perfect spot that catches them when they come into the property.

I guess the true test will be if they can be kept away for a couple of weeks or so.

Thanks for the update Nanz. Do they upset the birds at all? There's a robin in my garden I'm very fond of - would hate to scare it off!

There is a sensitivity meter so you can adjust it, if you look on their website it has a bit more information:

I think it possibly would scare them off, ill see if I can keep an eye on it and ill report back :)

Haha thats great

Glad im not the only one, cant imagine them in my house as I have 2 cats

Here is the latest update... So I turn my scarecrow gadget off during the day and I came home today to see there was something on my deck, from afar it looked like a dead bird, however I wasn't prepared for what it actually was.  Off all the possible things that a fox can bring into the yard, it brought in a quite sizeable Crab Claw!

Gutted i didn't think about taking a photo of it!

Anyways it looks like the scarecrow is a success, I woke up this morning to see about 4 foxes in the neighbours yard.  I did see them look through the fence to think about coming over but they refrained from the 30 odd minutes that I watched them.

I was gifted a whole fish last week. At least a foot long, and beginning to pong which must be why it was abandoned.  Some of these items are distinctly weird to find 50 miles from the sea, as if they fell from the sky.

We found a bra in our back garden once that I assume was a fox gift.

@ Michael, that's your story, stick to it.

Though I did once live next door to a Tonkinese cat that had a sock fetish. Every week her embarrassed owner would call round the neighbours with a bag of socks for us to reclaim our missing ones.

The kitten belonging to our neighbours two doors up has turned out to be a bit of a kleptomaniac. They found a soft toy Mickey Mouse on their rug last week.
