Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Local surgeries are calling on local residents to book their flu vaccination without delay, as new figures show that 3,798 people died from flu-related causes in England last winter - and this year's flu season appears to be arriving earlier than expected.

Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows flu positivity was already at 2.46% in late August 2026 - higher than the same point last year - a sign that the virus is circulating in communities well before the traditional winter peak. Health experts warn that waiting until symptoms appear in those around you is already too late, as the vaccine takes up to two weeks to become fully effective.

Flu is often described as "just a bad cold," but the reality is very different. The virus can cause serious complications including pneumonia, sepsis, and heart failure - particularly in older adults, people with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women. The 3,798 excess deaths recorded last winter are a stark reminder of the real harm flu causes every year in England.

The NHS flu vaccination is free for those who are eligible, including people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, children aged 2 to 3, school-age children (offered through schools), and adults and children with certain long-term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. Carers and those living with someone who has a weakened immune system are also eligible.

Residents can find out more about the flu and Covid-19 vaccine programme and check their eligibility at: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/seasonal-health/keep-warm-keep-well/

I have had flu twice in my life.  On both occasions I was in bed for five days, unable to do more than shuffle for a further week and depressed for a good six weeks.  It’s not an illness to be trifled with.
