Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This morning I added a new page which is designed to allow people to offer constructive feedback on the services they've received at the hand of the health service.

It's not designed for campaigning of any sort, but having posted it I was forwarded the following email which was recently circulated by Lynne Featherstone, LibDem MP for neighbouring Hornsey Constituency:

Dear Haringey Residents,

Health bosses are drawing up proposals to radically change the way health services in our area are provided. These include the downgrading of the Whittington Hospital to 'local hospital' status. This means, amongst other drastic changes, that full 24 hours Accident and Emergency (A&E) services
would end. (see: http://bit.ly/darziplans for more details).

Out of hours, there would not be full emergency treatment. Therefore, local
residents will have to travel further in emergencies - adding valuable
minutes when they matter most.

If an ambulance is called to your home in Hornsey & Wood Green, for many
people, their closest A&E is at the Whittington Hospital. As a borough, we
are already poorly serviced for emergency hospital services - without a
single unit in Haringey itself. I am not opposed to local health services
being more efficient, but my Liberal Democrat councillor colleagues and I
will not accept any cuts in the services at our closest hospital.

Local people have yet to be given any say on these proposals; however, in
their current form, all the options mean that the Whittington would be
downgraded to a 'local' hospital. Health officials have refused to give me
written assurances that our A&E will not be closed.

Therefore, we must make it absolutely clear that, as a community, we will
not accept any closure of the Whittington's Accident & Emergency or a
reduction of the services provided there. We must be loud and clear -
please sign this petition to make your voice heard
http://bit.ly/SaveOurAandE.

Kind regards,

Lynne

This petition to safeguard Whittington Hospital's status and services is rather urgent.
As I'm sure as many residents of Harringay/St Ann's/Tottenham use the Whittington as those from Hornsey & Wood Green, I hope David Lammy and all local councillors are lending their support to this cause. Don't leave it all to Lynne.

Good to see Keith Flett and David Lammy taking a lead on this too.
And it's not just the A&E that has a big sword of Damocles over it. Even brand new improvements like intensive care are in danger. Downgrading to 'local hospital status' means that all sorts of specialisms and departments can be chipped off, shifted and shafted. Anyone in the south and west of this borough should be as worried as residents of Islington.
The threat to A and E services at the Whittington Hospital is alarming. How long does it take to travel from Harringay to the Royal Free Hospital at Hampstead, even with a blue light flashing?
