Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Festival - First of Many More to Come
Councillor Canver, Chair of the Green Lanes Strategy Group, sent a message round to local groups last night welcoming their role in making the festival a success and looking to a future where the festival is a feature of Harringay's year:
"The festival showed what a fantastic community spirit there is in Harringay Green Lanes and it is a true testament to what can be achieved when everyone works together. This type of event has been much sought after in the local community and it was a great tribute to everyone involved that it was such a success. I hope that this is the first of many more to come!", wrote Cllr Canver.
Cllr. Canver also offered her thanks to the residents' groups, traders, staff, other councillors and the police for their time and effort in making the festival such a success.

This is a good honest debate going on here and that cant be a bad thing. Seems that the festival had some good stalls and activities (maybe the few with the long queues at them?) but more was needed and more diversity to include all classes and ethnicities. I certainly dont want 'poncy' or 'bourgeois' fine wines and olives a al Borough market but neither did I want to sit on the filthy road. There did need to be more going on there- including some good old working class food fayre and a better environment in which to eat and enjoy. Lets hope the organisers can take on board all our comments and lets keep talking/debating.

I am sure that those stall holders 'who made no effort' did not make much money and probably didn't make much of a profit on the 100 quid they shelled out to hire the stall. They have hopefully learned their lesson and will observe where the queues were and think on...
I actually believe that the traders did not forsee the numbers or anticipate fully what visitors were expecting. As they have stressed to all, they have asked for this festival for 7 years and if they were caught on the hop after all that time, they have only themselves to blame. I will hope the discussion they have amongst themselves will be as honest as the one on here. From another perspective, some friends from outside Harringay enjoyed its slightly amateurish feel, made it feel more local and 'real' apparently. After all fancy festivals are 10 a penny in London.
I am going to try and get all the opinions/ideas on here pulled together and try to feed them back. It wasn't too bad, I had fun and everyone has to start somewhere. Better it happened and was a bit tatty than not at all, it will be a learning process for everyone.

And if it isn't too late, Liz, could I refer back to a WightmanPaul post: 'Harringay Festival Traffic Arrangements', April 10, in 'Campaigns and other Local Issues' - mainly to do with where the brunt of any Festival Traffic diversions will fall, but with some further positive suggestions about greater Ladder inclusivity in any future festival.

Just to let you know that all your feedback and suggestions were collated and passed onto Dasos, the neighbourhood manager, in a productive informal meeting this morning (Tuesday 13th).
I passed on the appreciation of residents for his hard work and that of his team. He thanked residents for the feedback and wants to let you know that it will all be fed into the planning for the next one...when the decision is made on if and when the next one takes place.
