And then, Jimbo, please email the Council.
Someone from the Environment Department might read these observations about the crossing. But the only way to make sure they do is to copy them directly. (As well as posting on HoL.)
As a driver I sometimes find it difficult to see of anyone is waiting at the crossing. Driving from West Green road and the pavement is often obscured by stopped (traffic jam) vehicles. Also the gate to the park is so near to the crossing that pedestrians are right on top of it almost without having to face the road so drivers are unsure if they intend to cross or not. Perhaps a speed hump there, (although I hate them usually) would slow them down somewhat.
In your dreams TW
Having nearly been knocked down on a pedestrian crossing by a car ignoring the red light, I ran after him, caught up and said " A red light means stop "
His reply?
" For you, but not for me."
What can you do with people like that ?
Quote their registration number back at they and they almost always stop being smart arses.
I am also a driver and use the local roads. The flashing balls on the ends of the striped poles are there to warn you that there is a zebra crossing and I believe, if you read the highway code, you are supposed to slow down on the approach.
I do accept, however, that when people are standing near the crossing, it is difficult to know if they are crossing or not so I stop anyway.
Re balls, in case you're interested - Belisha Beacons.
Madeline I think your idea of a speed hump to slow traffic at this point (the west side of the crossing at Endymion Rd) is a good idea. If I am taking grand children across I have to resort to waving the traffic down and getting eye contact before I cross to ensure that they will actually stop, even though we have right of way.
Don't trust eye contact. I ride a small motorbike and as any motorcyclist will tell you, despite looking straight at you the car driver always says "Sorry mate, didn't see you" as you lay there in the middle of the road after they've pulled out in front of you.
Yes I often experience the same problem when trying to cross at Endymion Road. There's little point in having a zebra crossing there if drivers just ignore it! Speed bumps might be the solution. Alroy Road is worse though. Trying to deal with traffic coming from 3 different places makes it really hazardous!
Did anyone take up my suggestion about reporting this problem and suggested solutions to the Environment Department? I phoned the number on the Council's website and the person answering told me that I needed to email.
So apologies for repeating Inaccurate information from the website without checking. The email address was correct: frontline@haringey.gov.uk

Speed and visibility are the issues. Speed: Wightman Rd is already 20 mph with speed bumps: now that a borough-wide 20 mph limit is planned*, perhaps Endymion Rd will acquire speed bumps too? Visibility: the location right on the bend isn't ideal, but it's its relative unfamiliarity that can lead to not registering the zebra crossing. Relative unfamiliarity? It's the only non-traffic-light-controlled crossing in the Ladder area. It would make sense to replace it by a crossing with traffic lights. That would give a positive indication (red/green lights) and make it more likely to be complied with.
* except the TfL-managed red routes - Holloway Rd and Seven Sisters Rd
