Parts of North London will be plunged into mourning to learn the news that the iconic camper van will no longer be made as Volkswagen discontinue production after 63 years.
Changes in regulation to the way that the vehicles are built in Brazil – the only place left that produces the hardy roadrunners – will mean that all vehicles made from 2014 will need to have air bags and anti-lock braking systems.
Camper Van fans can relive the glory years at Camper Blog which carries a number of retro ads for the old hippy bus.
There's also a rather nice blog on the BBC website remembering going on holidays in the VW Camper in the 1970s

I was a proud owner of a T2 in the 1980s and it was in this van that I made a life changing first visit to Germany.

The Germans always called the earlier model T1 & T2 vans 'bullys'. Even in the 1980s they were to be seen everywhere. In earlier times some had even been used on the railways in Germany in Austria as rail buses: http://www.flickr.com/photos/isarsteve/681189706/in/set-72157605416...
The VW in general has a special place in the hearts of Germans, probably taking second place to the Brandenburg Gate, the sight of which brings out emotions and is that reminder that Germans are now free.
