Popped into my local newsagent today, the one next to Barclays bank, and saw it being refurbished with no sign of the usual proprietor(s) who has been there ever since I moved here. I asked the young woman on the counter if it had changed hands and she said yes, they've sold up and gone.
You get used to the faces and the friendly little chat in the local shops and these newsagents were just a stable part of the community for me. It was a family business I believe - I remember when a brother died years back. I had no idea they were selling up and feel sad I didn't get to say thanks for everything and goodbye. Perhaps it was high time for them to retire, they worked very hard.
I'll miss them. Hope the new owners are friendly!

I was surprised when the proprietor told me some years ago that Dave is an Indian name pronounced Dha-veh (and it wasn't April 1!).
He probaby rightly guessed many people wouldnt pronounce his name correctly opted for Dave. I'm going to miss those guys. Wish I could have said goodbye....
The new owners told me they intend to expand the restaurant next door (which they also own) into what was Dave's. The shop two doors down (currently shuttered) will apparently become the new "Dave's".
If, of course, they can get a restaurant licence.
Expand the restaurant next door - so Diyarbakir owns it? (Next door the other way is Barclays Bank).
There are two other newsagents on the main drag, so they/their planning advisors could argue there's little loss of amenity.
Apparently a different story is being spun to other customers. The alternative version has it very expressly staying as an off-licence-cum-general store.
Hmm, wait and see then. I used the shop this week and my impression was that - for now - it is continuing as a newsagents. But I only saw, and didn't interrogate, the current shop staff not the A N Other owner.
And there's how many Turkish restaurants? Big ones? Another expanded one will mean more noise, traffic, litter and pollution. I hope we can keep a newsagents there.
I wonder if a Caribbean restaurant would do well there? Errrm nope! Can you get a decent ruby Murray there?
I miss Dave's too, they were always friendly and willing to help, having mobility problems they are well placed for me,with my G.P.s over the road, the bank, chemist, and grocer's all within easy reach.I wish the family well, and like others am sorry I didn't get the chance to say thankyou and a proper goodbye.
It is a shame Andrina, we'll miss them and their friendliness. I hope they are having some well deserved r and r now. Things change, people move on.... we just have to hope that the new owners are nice to their customers.
