Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey has apparently spent ten thousand pounds on replacing the chairs in the council chamber because some were a bit wobbly.

Had they been thrown around? Why not repair or replace just the wobbly ones? Were the 'old' chairs recycled in some way?

A council spokeswoman said the chairs had to be replaced as they were wobbly, unstable and in poor condition — making them a health and safety risk.

Haringey is probably not alone in coming up with pitiful excuses for extravagance.Their action (and mindset) is probably little different from councils the world over.

Within the last few years, the Kapiti Coast District Council (north of Wellington, NZ) was going to equip new cars for their officers with optional-extra magnesium-alloy wheels. There was public cirticism when this was reported in the press. The justification was that mag wheels were safer (!) than ordinary steel wheels and that this extra would boost the eventual resale value of the cars (!?).
