Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)

In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.

This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.

However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!

One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000  vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.

After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. You can clearly see the details on the full size pdf map attached below.

Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.

At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

A pdf copy of the Wightman Road closure is attached, along with some Council-produced documentation. You can stay up to date with what's happening on the Wightman Road closure on a dedicated page on the council website here.

Simple solution - get them on HOL!

Believe it or not a friend in Edmonton was in disbeliefe because they hadn't heard up there but usually do.
Asda delivery guy didn't know about what is going to happen. I pointed him to HOL and told him to tell his bosses.
My next door neighbour didn't know that he would be unable to park his car outside his house as it is being restricted for passing cars. He suggested it would affect his car insurance as he has stated he parks it outside his home.
Unless he said that he has a dedicated space I can't see how his insurance would be affected. A resident's parking permit gives you permission to park in a CPZ but not it in a particular space.

We did the same for another supermarket delivery driver who also knew nothing about it ... but they soon will. Remember the 'carpark meltdown' at Arena Trading' estate a number years back where people had to abandon their cars overnight ... it'll be that all over again ... if anyone can get in!

I think the first week will be chaotic. Mainly for drivers who use this as their regular route and do it on auto pilot. After than I'm hoping they will start to look at alternative routes - maybe even leave their cars at home!

I agree with you Michael. I would hope that the council and NW are prepared too. Furthermore, in my humble opinion I fully expect the ensuing peace and fresher air to be something precious to the west/middle of the ladder, which will be a wrench in August/Sept when the road opens again.

I too hope that the leaving the car at home for the unnecessary trips becomes a habit.

They should check what cover they have...where insurance is for "outside the house" implies off road ie. On a drive, and they might not pay out for a theft from the road, but it wouldn't matter exactly what part of the road. I had the same problem with one of my many bike thefts where I normally park in the front garden but someone had blocked our gate so of course that would be the night it was nicked....

Hilariously it's all over Green Lanes and Wightman Rd for inquisitive pedestrians to see. Ant and I thought the first one was an asbo the writing was so small when we were putting up Hurtle signs last week.

You might like to finish the job and take the Hurtle signs down now

I've taken a few down but I think we need to put some smaller ones up on a permanent basis as there are runners this weekend doing the hurtle course. If you could take any that you see down I'd appreciate it.

It does say 'no through route' so those motorists wishing to pass through the area will understand.  What the Council seem to have failed to grasp in their literature, right from the outset, is that they should be considering the interests and needs of the residents also.  I call this the 'Wightman syndrome' and I extend my sympathy to new sufferers.
