Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Love this idea from Mexican internet portal Terra which is encouraging dog owners to poop and scoop by offering them free WiFi in return. The company is piloting the idea at 10 parks in Mexico City in a campaign by DDB Mexico.

When people throw away their bags of poop in a special box in the park, it calculates the weight and Terra gives everyone free minutes of Wi-Fi in the park. The greater the weight, the more minutes are added -- and everyone can enjoy a poo-free park. In an age when people are probably more interested in staring at their smartphone than watching what their dog is doing, it's a smart idea. What's to stop pedestrians from tossing not just poop, but other waste that they wouldn't mind parting with? Nothing, says the agency, but we figure that would just help keep the streets even cleaner anyway (a la Volkswagen's Fun Theory). To help consumers focus on the poop, however, hostesses manned each of the bins during the day, passing out bags for doggie droppings.

Great idea!
And we could do with some of those hostesses along the New River path!...

In some ways I like this. It might be one part of the answer to the problem. It might appeal to some people (the ones with dogs + laptops/etc), at some times of the year (when its warm and those people want to sit in parks using their laptops/whatever), in some parks.

Anyway in the parks and on the streets, my anecdotally-observed and hopefully not too stereotypical thought is that most of the people responsible for most of the dog poo aren't the same as the people who might pick it up if they got free wi-fi in return. Fair enough? Or not?

So maybe this idea would need to offer more than free minutes of wi-fi (and don't some London parks/open spaces offer free wi-fi anyway?).

But yes as with Debbie I am intrigued by the idea of hostesses handing out doggie poo bags. Sounds like the kind of ultra surreal thing we need more of around here!
