Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Does anyone have any problem receiving recycling related items from Veolia?  Veolia took over the services to do with recycling for the council (last year?) and I have been asking garden waste bags twice (three times if I include the hand over from the previous organisation).  Last time I inquired their record allegedly says they have delivered and I have requested again as I haven't.  There is no proof of delivery so how can I tell if they have really done it?  I am not happy to ask for it again particularly as I can come across as if I am asking more bags...

I have asked twice now, neither time have I received one.

Ditto.

I have asked twice now for a garden waste bag and still have not received a bag within 10 days as promised.

I have also reported dog fouling on the pavement outside our property which has not been cleaned up.

And I have reported a local resident twice who allows their dog to foul outside our property and have received no response.

So far the council teams seem to be on their jollies and not responding to requests.... i wonder how quickly they would respond if I stopped paying council tax...

There's two services at work there Sally.

Veolia can be reached for 'feedback' on this page re not clearing up dog poo and failing to deliver bags.

The Enforcement service is under the beady eye of Councillor Nilgun Canver who is cabinet member for environment. You can mail her both about your concerns re enforcement and whether Veolia are doing their job properly.  nilgun.canver@haringey.gov.uk

Thanks for the info Liz.

Veolia delivered a kitchen wastebin OK within a couple of weeks when ordered online.

The garden waste bags may get stolen (re-homed) if left in the garden, as they are useful for all sorts apparently.

Another request made after my last post (3rd times with Veolia), I have not seen the bags for a few weeks now...  I can conceive that someone stole the bags just as soon as they were delivered to your door front but it is hard to believe that it happened every time they delivered...  Seeing what others are saying here, I hate the jump the conclusion but it feels more likely that they actually have not delivered the bags.

Hello all

I made an enquiry via Veolia's excellent Twitter stream about this and they followed it up. Here's the response I received from Haringey's Contact Service Manager.

Dear Liz,

Thank you for bringing to our attention the issue surrounding container deliveries.

As you may be aware we are currently in the process of introducing a new waste and recycling service to parts of the borough (covering Highgate, Muswell Hill, Fortis Green, Alexandra and parts of Hornsey, Noel Park, Bounds Green, Woodside and Crouch End). The new service is designed to deliver a 40 per cent recycling rate, significant reductions in carbon emissions and reduce the amount of waste going to incineration or landfill. More information on the changes can be found here: http://www.haringey.gov.uk/changes.

Due to the service change we anticipated and planned for an increase in container orders. However, we encountered a far greater demand than expected. To compensate for this we have now further increased the number of staff members dedicated to carrying out the deliveries, to ensure that all requests are met and we clear any back log.

We are aware that there were also some issues previously around container delivery which should now have been resolved - if residents do have an issue relating to the service provided by Veolia, we would urge them to contact us so we can work with them to rectify this as soon as possible. We can be contacted on enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk or 020 8885 7700.

Thank you, Liz, I have sent email to them to re-request the bags.  Hopefully this time it would be fruitful.  Much obliged to your action.  I will keep you posted here of the outcome.

I asked for a bag once on the phone in January, and was told it wold arrive in 10 days (no bag arrived). I tried again using the online form in Feb and they replied very promptly with a very efficient sounding email, promising a bag soon. But still no bag! I have found that leaving garden waste tidily chopped up in a cardboard box alongside my recycling box works. But  live in hope for a proper bag to arrive once the backlog mentioned has been cleared...

Liz,

Thanks for the info, but what I don't understand is why the staff at the contact points you've listed don't know the above information? I've now made 4 requests and if I was given the above explanation I wouldn't be chasing them every 10 days.

I have done the same as you Katy and still no bag. They did say in the email they sent in response to the online form that if you have extra garden waste that doesn't fit in the bag they are supposed to supply that you can leave the extra bits in plastic bags by the recycling. So it seems they might be ok to take the garden waste without the bag, e.g. in a card board box or something as you suggest. Maybe we could all give up on the proper bags and just put the waste out in boxes or other plastic bags?
