Do you need planning permission for satellite dishes on the front of a house?

There's a couple of absolute monstrosities on Effingham which would put Jodrell Bank to shame. And they're usually right on the front of a house (between the 1st floor and ground floor bay windows).

Does anyone know if that's allowed? Do you need planning permission? I vaguely recall that there is a rule about where you can and can't put satellite dishes.
