Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We just took up a carpet that has likely sat on a Victorian tiled hallway for years. Result is that the underlay has almost become bonded to the tiles. We have a builder proposing to clean the tiles. He has been fantastic on the building work he has carried out but I was a bit nervous as to how the tiles were going to be treated...

Does anyone have any experience of renovating their own tiles, and have any dos and don'ts. He has scraped off a great deal of the underlay but I heard mention of use of acid to clean the tough stuff off, I was not sure how the tiles will react to such treatment.

Also, does anyone have a few spare tiles floating around, a few tiles are broken or missing from the inevitable nails and radiator pipes going through the tiles...

Worth checking the new tag I've added.

Thanks Hugh. I did actually check that tag on a few other posts, but from what I could see most of the discussion was about sourcing an external renovator. Cheers.

I bought some renovation fluid from Original Interiors in Crouch End - worth a looksee. You might also find it worth making a call to some of the folk referenced in those threads - get some free advice, meh?

I think you are right. What did the miracle cure Reonvation Fluid do for you? Was it just to bring the brightness back?

I seem to remember they had two grades: one to bring the brightness back and another for more serious deeper cleaning.

It might be worth having a look at PeelAway products. I've used them on a refurb project to clean up ceramic bricks & they worked a treat.

If you give them a call they should be able to recommend a product.

Best of luck with cleaning up the tiles.

Lucky you.  Sadly we didnt find any tiles :(

Justin. We did our hallway last year. There are several manufacturers making these products. The advice that we had was to make sure you don't mix - so if you use a cleaner from one company don't use a sealant from another company. I think we used Lithofin products. It was hours of work scrubbing off the underlay though. Good Luck
