Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Now that Disney's is closing down it's likely that a new owner will be taking over the premises. The Victorian frontage is the last like it on Green Lanes and well worth preserving. I've written to the portfolio holder for planning, Cllr Demirci, to find out what can be done so we don't lose this wonderful building (see below) but I think that this is definately a job for the eyes and ears of HoL!

Dear Cllr Demirci,

Disney's, which has operated from Harringay Green Lanes for over 100 years, is closing down and I assume that the commercial premises either has been or will shortly be put up for sale.

The frontage of Disney's is the last intact non-licensed Victorian commercial premises in Green Lanes, and a rarity in the borough. I have checked on Haringey's register of listed buildings and it does not seem to have listed building status or to be listed as a building of local interest.

I would be very concerned if any future owner or lessee of the premises were to alter the magnificent shop front. Could I ask if you could contact the appropriate director to find out what could be put in place to prevent this happening.

With the new Paddy Power Betfair merger, it's a fair bet that Disney's will become Dismaland on three floors. Maybe if we're nice to them they'll keep up the 1913 facade?

I agree! I am very sorry to hear they are closing. The level of service is so unusual, it really took the stress out of a big purchase, knowing how helpful and friendly they would be. Thank you Disneys!

They are closing down Osbawn. They couldn't compete with all the online sites. And the lease was up 

That's true but I guess round here there are a lot of landlords and it's easier for them. They won't be sitting/sleeping on what they buy. Plus it's often cheaper. 

Unless English Heritage list a building it is not safe. Local listing means nothing to Haringey council

You're right about local listing Lesley, but it is at least something a planner must take into consideration if an application to make alterations is made, and give an explanation of why they decided to agree plans that went against the purpose of the local listing. At the moment a plan to alter the frontage wouldn't even have that level of protection.
One of the reasons I asked HoL members to be the eyes and ears on this one is that if the frontage seems to be imminently under threat of alteration a local authority can apply for a Building Preservation Notice under section 3 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. This not only gives the local authority the power to give up to six months temporary protection to the building but also acts as an application to the DCMS for the building be considered for listing.
Sorry, the last bit should read "serve" a Building Preservation Notice. They have the power to do this as a local authority and don't need permission from the DCMS.
I'd did say the power John, not the inclination!
Yes, there were alterations by Disney at some point and the southern shop front (the chicken shop in the more contemporary picture) was lost but the bones of the corner frontage and the one next to it remained. Perhaps it would be more accurate to call it Victorian with Edwardian alterations.

Antepliler could do with another unit.

Next time you're down that way take the plunge and go in Pavlos. The cakes are wonderful.
