Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The following has been removed from a posting about an incident on Pemberton Road since I do not feel that posting is an appropriate place for this discussion. I am however happy to respond to any concerns here

I would like to add that there needs to be more professionalism from admin on this site. The lack of it has been very worrying. If you want to run a site porporting to represent and serve this community it must be done so with the upmost integrity.

I guess Councillors and such like prefer to do things indirectly, not leaving a paper trail then with their names on if things go badly wrong (nearly said something else then.... I moderated my language myself!) I doubt they want to get involved in actually posting things and discussing issues with real folk out there.
Hope the Comm website conf goes well Hugh. Would be interested in feedback.
Thanks Ruth. Will drop you a note by HoL Mail about them if you're interested.
Yes please. Although I am not teaching my MA on communities any more (I have lost my job....) I am still developing these themes and probably will write something about offline/online communities in the near future so all info gratefully received.
Alan Stanton is a councillor.
Sorry I didnt realise that. good he posts then and gets involved. thanks for telling me. I do learn things from HoL.
Ruth, it's impossible for councillors or for senior council officers to push the internet genie back in the bottle. Documents and minutes of meetings are online. So are videos of council meetings. If you want to know which councillors are directors of which companies, or own which properties - that's online too. Stuff you can't get easily, use the Freedom of Information Act. Emails leave trails.

Right now, would-be councillors from all parties are out knocking on doors and engaging with real folk. The internet offers more channels.

But very simply, there is a problem of time. I'm not a "cabinet" councillor.
John, in an ideal world perhaps, but you're talking about two leviathan cultures - these are big ships that take a long time to turn. I've had a number of conversations with Cllr Claire Kober (Leader of the Council) and I know she is supportive of what we do. That doesn't mean that she can snap her fingers and create culture change overnight. I've also been in conversation with the Chief Inspector in charge of Safer Neighbourhoods in Haringey and have learned that the Met's policy is not sympathetic to what we do. It's not a Haringey issue. But there are people on the inside seeking change. Again, don't expect it to happen overnight. Be understanding and it will come. I'm doing my bit, I assure you.

Let's not give Cllr Canver grief. I thought it was a great sign that she was willing to share information with what's now the key info channel for people in Harringay. I think her action was positive and should be praised. It's a big change from two years ago. I don't agree with your thoughts about her using me as a channel turning us into a residents' association. If anything a better comparison would be to a local paper - and they'd give their eye teeth to have people willing to give them info.
I really, really would like councillor Canver to post to the site herself, as she has done in the past. I think you're opening yourself up to problems by doing what you do for her. Alan Stanton is making hay out of this forum, if he was standing for the constituency of HoL nobody else would get a look in. I take your point about The Met but a week is a long time in politics, is it not?
To have my personal input on this, I think this site is incredibly professional considering the restrictions Ning may have on it. The sites founder and admin/mod is a professional or at the very least very clued up in this field and this is reflected in the broad content and information on this site.

It may not be professional in the sense of being a profitable or income receiving business but I think it is very professional.

There are many opinions on this site and from my viewing over the last two years we are all pretty civil, however we all have differing opinions on issues and this site, something that is not always respected. Contributors, HOL Group members and Mods have a duty take on board what others have to say.

I do have an issue with moderating and tinkering as you know, I prefer the natural flow of conversion and dislike the dissecting or deleting of conversations, that’s just the way I prefer it. Every time I have raised this I have been shouted down, never to discuss it, which is not listening to peoples concerns. If that’s the way concerns are treated then it’s not worth raising.

The site does allow for feedback via the links ad people to have input via the constituted group. I would argue that whilst this is great none of the major decision-making is made within that group which I personally think is a shame.

BTW I don't have a problem in relaying second hand information from a councillor as long as it is correct, I think it is good that she contacted the site to inform HOL of any verified information.
I am happy to provide a log of any tinkering I may do in my role as an admin and present it to the HOL meeting as an agenda item. It would not be an onerous task as it is done very rarely. The last posts I removed were by a now banned member who posted threats to another member and homophobic material and some that contravened the terms about personal slights. In both cases I wrote to the people involved. I also banned an Internet spammer last week. No post just disappears, we always write to people if their content has contravened our terms and conditions.

That's it. I keep a record of anyone's comments I remove and that has been it for the last few months.

Sometimes people remove their own posts and from time to time material is moved elsewhere for ease of reference but that is also rare and tends to happen when threads become very long and hard to read. I haven't done that at all. So there you have it. The extent of my tinkering.

Most of my role is about providing content which I would welcome help with, producing the newsletter which takes a few hours a week and sometimes asking people not to argue in threads and stick to the issues. I also ban spammers and deal with people's issues when they write to me.

It doesn't seem so much when written down but still takes up a good proportion of my week, luckily I don't have paid work really!
You do a grand job Liz. It is a lot of work.
Tom is that an oxymoron ?
