How do you manage to watch traffic coming from all angles when crossing here? I'd find it stressful at best.
Has anyone used it and how do you find it?
you shouldn't have to worry about watching traffic from all angles; if you've got a green man then you can cross. I'm not saying there aren't traffic light jumpers around, but basically you have right of way and it means you only have to cross once instead of twice. Diagonal crossings are a great innovation for improving walking and crossing city streets and have proved very successful in Tokyo, San Francisco and recently in London with the great crossing at Oxford Circus.
In answer to where it is, it's right by Wood Green tube station on Green Lanes. I haven't used it yet but being a sad geek I can't wait!
Here lies Mr Grey, he died defending his right of way! LOL
Thanks Hugo I'll take that under advisement,
I believe the old Green Cross Code told us to look and listen all the way across the road and after hearing about the old gentleman who died on Green Lanes due to someone skipping the red light, that's not a bad policy.
LOL Yes, I know *where* it is, I meant 'how do you get along with it'.
I love the idea of crossing at an angle as it means not having to cross several streets to get to where you're going, I just wondered about the safety angle. I've had concentration issues due to long term chronic illness and wonder how much visability you get of all the various roads feeding in.
Jack =;-)
I'll let you know after crossing it, but I imagine it's just as safe/not-safe as any other green man crossing, diagonal or not. I don't think being diagonal has any real impact on the safety. If anything, as it makes the whole crossing more noticeable and harder for motorists to ignore, I would guess that if anything the drivers are less likely to jump the the crossing.
There's only really the advantage that you only have to cross once, which is great!
Thanks Anna,
Just what I wanted to know. Mostly I was concerned about folks who aren't going to be as speedy as the average or are likely to be distracted, which includes folks with young kids I'd think. I don't trust all motorists (and the odd cyclist too) either, and I'd like to see them coming before impact!! It's a lot to watch out for.
Love the idea in principle though.
I can see sphamilton's point too - nightmare to cross several roads to go round to where you want to get to.
I've used it a couple of times and it works just fine. You wait for the crossings to go green - all at the same time and across you go - no stress and you don't really have to watch the traffic as it's all stopped.
Would love to see something like this at the Seven Sisters junction next to Tesco, which is currently a hideous mare's nest involving two different sets of traffic lights just to get across the road.
