damaged trees in finsbury park
I have been aware of the mindless dog damage to trees (I assume this is from dogs) on the main tree lined road from manor house gate to Finsbury park but only this week (since Wireless fences have gone up and the route around the park is limited) have I noticed that there is similar damage to nearly every tree along the Seven Sister's Road fence.
Some of these trees will die and the problem is clearly increasing.
I wonder what's the solution is?
Wrought iron baskets around the tree bases as they do in town to protect the trees?
I wonder if anyone has a foolproof solution or knows how to go about sorting this out. We
have a great park and it would be such a shame to lose any more of the trees than we have already.

I confronted a couple who were allowing their pitbull to completely debark the lower section of a tree near the F PK gate, as I cycled through at 9.45 this evening. They didn't seem to think they were doing anything wrong, so I gave them a lengthy lecture. But I was at a loss to know what else to do. Have you come up with any solution as to how to respond when you catch someone in the act, or any advice from Haringey tree officers?

I think this must be the tree you are referring to which I noticed this morning. The bark is stripped all the way around and to the top so it will now die.
I am still compiling the map I set out to do the illustrate where all the tree damage is before I approach the council again but with 70 trees along the boundary of seven sisters alone, it is quite a task. Half of those 70 trees are damaged to some degree or other.
As to how to tackle the culprits, it's really difficult to know what to do. Signs that tell people not the BBQ in the American Gardens are ignored so I doubt posting signs would do any good.
Some people will take a telling off but others will just be abusive and others outright threatening.
I'm hopeful that by the time I finish my 'survey', I might have a few more ideas

This is awful. As part of Haringey Tree Wardens, I've been in communication with the Aboricultural Department for a while over this and they have undertaken a number of actions to try to make this problem go away.
Apparently this was an even bigger problem a few years ago and it subsided, hopefully as a result of what they did then. Here's what they told me today:

Notices are scheduled to be put up this week around the park entrances and they are also assessing whether it is feasible to put cages onto some of the trees. However, those that have been damaged are both mature specimens and recently planted trees. There is a danger that if trees are caged, they simply move elsewhere in the park to cause damage to un-caged trees.
One thing that officers have stated to some dog owners believed to have cause damage was that some trees are poisonous to animals, including dogs, but they were not going to say which ones.

Here is the text of the public notice:
Trees in this park are being damaged by dogs.
A large number of trees in the park have had bark torn from them by dogs.
Unfortunately in many cases the damage is so bad that the affected trees will die.
It is therefore important that this criminal damage is stopped immediately.
If you are a dog owner or in charge of a dog and are allowing or encouraging the dog
to cause damage to the trees in this way please be advised that the Council will take
legal action to prosecute anyone in whose care the dog is at the time of the offence.
Please also note that some trees are poisonous to animals, including dogs)

I attach the Dog Damage leaflet - it's one of the things they can do.
The Tree Dept are on the case and everyone is grateful for the important work you continue to do. If I can help, please let me know, maybe put your map on the Tree Wardens website or something.
I'd like to add my voice to those asking that everyone is careful around anyone who may have done damage. They might be capable of worse so I would steer well clear of any contact and not let it be known that I was observing/recording, especially if alone or if the person might think you a witness. Dogs can be vicious.

This is seriously disturbing, and indicative of both the cretinous nature of many people in our midst and also the consequence of failures of local authorities to provide (or central government to fund) park wardens.
I don't understand though how a dog can damage the bark all the way up - how is this possible?
Odd as I cycle through the park daily from one diagonal to the other and have never seen any of these damaged trees..

The recently posted picture using a tree next to the main carriage way down to FO from MH and very easy to see.
Once you break the surface if the bark, great lengths come away easily. I'd say this stripping was helped by people but if you read an earlier post, hhnrau actually saw it happening.

There was a programme about dangerous dogs on channel 5 the other night. Some of the owners were training them to be aggressive abd using trees for them to strengthen their jaws. :-( Really scary stuff.....
