Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

On the way to the post office this afternoon I almost got bowled over twice by cyclists mounting the footpath to cycle "offroad" on Grand Parade. They seemed totally unbothered by it, but I'm fairly sure it's illegal to ride on the footpath. Can anyone enlighten me?

No, I am working on the principle that 17 wrongs make a wrong

Well (Emma since you ask) the Highway Code has a section on 'Rules for pedestrians', in 35 parts no less. Part 13 is on 'Routes shared with cyclists'.  It says:

"Some cycle tracks run alongside footpaths or pavements, using a segregating feature to separate cyclists from people on foot.  .....  Not all routes which are shared with cyclists are segregated. Take extra care where this is so."

It's not as descriptive  ["marked by a white line", say] or assertive ["do not walk in or cross the cycle track unless it is clear", say] as it could be. Mind you, how many pedestrians know there's a section for them in the Highway Code?

effingham, yes it's an unhappy compromise, just keep using your audible warning of approach if you're a cyclist; if (like me at that location) you're a pedestrian check and doublecheck when crossing it. It doesn't help that there's next to no colour difference between the pavement and the notionally green-coloured cycle track under the bridge, since it doesn't get washed clean by rainfall.

John D, yes x7, but the random pedestrian is also a hazard though a less frequent one..

Yes as I am a pedestrian too and know not all cyclists are Saints! Especially some in parks that seem to think they are ina. Racetrack!
Wow I'll be pulling that out next time I'm ina. Cycle lane and someone refuses to move oyt of a clearly marked cycle lane!)
I think we need proper cycle routes for cyclist not on the pavement but on the road SAFE ONES...not just coloured in

Yes. Some of the best writing on this subject, partly because he lives near The Bow Roundabout and Cycle Superhighway 2, is a blogger name of Diamond Geezer. He's not a cyclist but he is analytical and persistent, as well being thoughtful and very interesting on a host of other topics, including Harringay locality.

I'm also a fan.  Diamond Geezer's writing is intelligent, thoughtful,  factual, and often drily funny.

Another useful thing is that the blog's search facility seems to work reasonably well. So if you search, for example, for "cycle superhighway" you get a list with helpful short excerpts.

Such as this on 4 September 2014.

Nice to see that you were ignored.

Can you please refer to me as Mr Marxist Milksop from now on?

Troll time,  John. Must be nearly spring.

I would post some pictures of dutch indulging in dangerous cycling with children (pic 10 is one of my favourites), but you wouldn't care because "London's not like Amsterdam: we've just not got the space".

Really easy answer. Below is a direct cut and paste from The Highway Code section relating to cyclists

You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement.
Laws HA 1835 sect 72 & R(S)A 1984, sect 129

No exemptions, no wriggle room.

No exemptions or wriggle wroom, despite the official advice to the Met being detailed in this article. Advice which the police seem happy to ignore.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for prosecuting 'dangerous' cyclists, whether they're on the pavement or road. The majority though are at worst a relatively benign antisocial nuisance, which is backed up by there being nothing much other than anecdotal evidence to the contrary.
