Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There is growing impatience and frustration about the Council’s lack of action on improving cycling and pedestrian safety on Green Lanes.*  This mounting concern was covered in a recent piece in the Ham and High (see link below) about this and the growing discontent from cyclist about the safety of cycling along Green Lanes – either as a commuter, or just travelling to the local shops and services.

As Trump would say…. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

* and elsewhere across the borough.  All the cycle routes from surrounding boroughs stop abruptly at the Haringey border!

You can also add these roads to the "hairy" description

West Green rd

Turnpike Lane

Wightman Road

I got hit-and-runned on my bike on Turnpike Lane a few year back when a  car came from behind and drove into me.

Nobody including the police were interested.

12 years ago, the worst roads for air pollution in the Borough was reported here.

Haringey Council cares about air pollution … but cares not enough to do much about it.

For 20 years, Haringey Council has strongly supported car-owner rights and pay lip service to cycling.

Not entirely true. You haven’t mentioned the introduction of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods amid much opposition?

Exactamundo. The ltns are a perfect opportunity to cycle safely down quiet roads (which i do) avoiding traffic and fumes but hey look cyclists want to ride flat out down green lanes as well. Lets get rid of all the buses and vans along with the cars so London can be a velodrome

THE Highwaymen and their mistresses at Haringey Council are likely to feel content that they have resisted any meaningful change to this conduit of toxic fumes, for some 20 years.

Has it been shopkeeper lobbying that has maintained this open sewer of pollution?

Among the neighbouring Boroughs, Haringey continues as an island bastion of car-owner entitlement. And—despite PR, promises and publications—with the current crew there is Net Zero prospect of change. The attention of the Cabinet remains focused on Borough of Culture 2027.

It's always been pretty grim but the real issue is that it is still better than the alternatives. There's no easy way round it without either a big diversion or using Wightman Rd which is worse.

Depends where youre coming from and going. I always go via the gardens and avoid main roads where i can. With all the ltn roads available its mind boggling why people still insist on riding (fast) down main roads with loads of people and cars. Just asking for trouble. Last night i watched a lycra wrapped roadie simulating one of the sprint stages of the vuelta (in the rain) only to come to a sliding stop when a van pulled a u turn in front of him. Be sensible, its a main road in a busy city, you cant charge along at 25 miles an hour and expect it to end well. No doubt he will jump on a forum to complain about everyone else 😂

Turnpike Lane to Manor House. You can do various looping diversions that will cut out bits of Green Lanes (e.g. the Gardens) but they are long and don't cut out much of Green Lanes for the length of diversion.

There's also no easy diversions if you're heading northbound unless you want to be turning right across traffic, northbound generally is worse as there's no bus lane.

The parking along the bus lane is so dangerous - I can't understand why cars are allowed to park on such a major road

  • The council really cares about dangerous roads
  • It just does not care enough to do anything meaningful
  • Previous paper promises to improve GL could pave much of the carriageway
  • Lobbying from shopkeeper interests may be part of the parking policy and practice paralysis

The last point is key. The shopkeepers who pay a lot of council tax/business rates lobby the council en masse against changes that are not in their interest so the council look after them. This is clientism pure and simple given the shopkeepers' ability to influence voting within the wider Turkish/Kurdish community.
