When you pass Stroud Green Library on Stapleton Hall Road, you see a well-kept food growing space and there's more of it behind the Library. All done by local volunteers, it's amazing - local fresh veg for whoever wants it - free! But now so many delicious lettuces, leeks, herbs etc have been grown that the soil at the space needs re-plenishing. The group wants to raise money to buy new compost. Here's the link for North London Waste where all our food waste + garden stuff goes to be composted. They will deliver a load for free to community sites - BUT you have to take a whole 15 ton load and that's a lot. Depends on how many beds you have, it could be perfect. Sometimes they will do a half load if you have s/o to share it with. If you put the word out you'll find it will be taken by a swarm of people with shovels + bags, especially at this time of year - the drop last Sunday at Ally Pally was all gone by noon, this was unprecedented. You need an accessible space by a road where it will be gone in 24 hours, and do a risk assessment, that's all.
It's good stuff, great for soil improving, and they publish info re the NPK content. I think the main difference between this and the commercial stuff is that the latter has added chemicals to get the balance perfect (which is why it has a sell-by date, it goes off).
Do you know where the Ally Pally dates are advertised? Liz has posted them in the past, but I haven't seen anything recently.
You missed the last one last weekend. I posted it in the events. I get them via Sustainable Haringey emails but they also have a calendar on their website
Damn! I could have saved a few quid. Thanks Liz.
Hello, thanks for your replies. I'm one of the gardening volunteers, and we have thought about the free stuff but I think we'd struggle with the logistics and quantities, given the nature of our space.
We are also hoping to buy some linseed oil to weatherproof our veg beds, some good quality manure and some other bits and bobs for the garden, so we'd appreciate any support people can give. We're offering something in return for anyone who is feeling generous - in the form of some garden produce or even a visit to your own garden from our veg-growing expert to offer tips and advice.
