Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

At last night's  AGM for the Alexandra Park Youth Football Club, we were advised that at a recent meeting discussing council grounds and parks that there was a suggestion made that independent individuals, clubs and groups might be being charged in the future for organising activities in Council parks.

Does anyone know, please, of the accuracy of this suggestion and can anyone shed any light on it ?

Thanks in advance.

This is bonkers. Surely not.

This will hardly encourage folks to get out from in front of the TV....
Bonkers but real elsewhere; As 'Stoke Gifford Parish Council have introduced a charge for Little Stoke parkrun ... It is with great regret that we are announcing the closure of Little Stoke parkrun.'

This council is probably looking into the idea of licensing business users. If someone is making money charging parents for their kids to play football in a council run park the council will be looking for a slice of the profits. It's crass but councils don't really have many revenue streams open to them. They're being encouraged to think like this due to the cuts we all know about.

Soon councils will keep business rates collected in their area but those with little significant business will have a major shortfall in funding. The promise is to make up for that somehow by sharing monies from wealthier councils ... yeah right! So I'd suggest unfortunately this sort of idea being put forward is going become more common.

Doesn't AP YFC pay anything to use Albert Rec for its matches? It doesn't seem unreasonable for me to expect that they would, given that it's a public park which then has to be maintained as a result of the regular use as a football pitch (as well as having to mark it out etc.). And I say this as someone whose son plays for APY FC.

Hi Bushy,

The club plays match fees for use of the pitches,as you would expect, but this is about informal training / small matches etc and if it's happening is without precedent and, although opinions will differ, I feel it's a bad move.

What are the parks to be used for if not exercise in an outdoor setting ?
