ORAL QUESTION 8 - TO THE CABINET MEMBER FOR ENVIRONMENT FROM COUNCILLOR CARTER:
How much did the new cycling racks on Green Lanes cost to buy and install?
ANSWER
The Green Lanes major scheme includes the provision and installation of 72 new cycle racks at a cost of £17,000.
However, it became evident to officers following the receipt of the racks in May this year, that they were not fit for purpose with manufacturing and design flaws. The suppliers have agreed to replace all the racks at no additional cost to the Council.
Officers will shortly be consulting Ward Councillors and the Haringey Cycling Campaign to find a suitable alternative design.

Cycle Bath reported four locations for temporary experiments in that city but I couldn't see dates on their website.
The company which makes them seems to be CycleHoop. But the links I've found date back to 2011.
The one below was a temporary trial in 2012 in Kingston Street Cambridge - reported in the Cambridge News

The original idea behind them was to demonstrate that you can fit 10 or 12 bikes in the space that a car takes up..
but there is now a model that Hackney were installing, and having moved around a bit,

to test where the cycle parking seemed to be needed. I know I did see one down there somewhere about a month ago, so they're still around and in use.
They're constructive, democratic street furniture.
And behind the outline car the actual bike stands [look] are large-diameter smooth-finish highly-visible steel tubes. Umm, some designers/architects DO know their stuff.
and an optional bike pump. Add a mini-bar and you've got all you need.

I may be able to offer a suggestion that could speed up the search:
If officers in River Park House were to walk over to the eastern side of their floor and look across the road, down to the entrance of Wood Green Underground station, they would see a good example of regular, British cycle stands. They feature:
Officers would also notice that, of the 15 (fifteen) stands provided, including two small ones for children's bikes, most are used. At about 19:30 last night, all but one were in use.
It's not rocket science; there's no need to re-invent this particular wheel; they're not susceptible to an architect's styling.
We have and ought to be able to take this kind of straight-forward facility for granted. Whoever was responsible for all this standard arrangement (probably an unsung Council Officer!), needs to be congratulated for getting it right ...
