Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Further to my post last week, Haringey Council have today started a consultation for the Trader and GLA led project to spruce up Harringay's stretch of Green Lanes.

A copy of a six-page fold out document detailing the options for consultation is being posted through the letter boxes of Harringay residents today.

If you're a home and you've seen it, what do you think? Do you like the lights on top of the Salisbury?

Not surprising the traders are behind this. But where is the logic in widening the pavements to give more room for pedestrians and then allowing cafes etc to spill out and deprive the pedestrians of the new-found room ?

That 3 hours 7 - 10 am  is critical to a large number of people trying to get to work in as calm a way as possible. Before the bus lane the hold ups were horrendous and i am opposed to its removal. However if 'TFL will have the final decision' is there any point me saying anything?

What is the thinking behind removing them? As mentioned above, the bus journey up Green Lanes (either way) is always really slow in my experience - I'd anticipate it getting worse if buses don't have priority. Is this just not being considered important or is it supposed to reduce congestion for all traffic (including buses) ?

I've just received a leaflet about the proposed improvements on Green Lanes asking for my opinions, which I have given.

But I wanted to ask if I'm missing something. My feeling is that it's complete madness to remove the bus lanes and make the road narrower along the stretch of GL from St Annes Road and the Areana - traffic will surely be at a total standstill? Traffic is forced along this road because of the restrictions on Wightman Rd, Hermitage Road and the Gardens and there are large parts of the day when it is already pretty stationary. The only times it flows reasonably is when the bus lanes are in operation. Also not allowing North bound traffic to get past traffic turning right into St Anne's Road is going to cause even more congestion.

Am I missing something?

I'm all for improving the look of Green Lanes and making it safer for pedestrians and think the proposals for the bridge and some of the side street entrances/exits are very good.

Losing the bus lane is a bad idea. I guess its the traders wanting more business and i can't blame them but it will make the traffic appalling. Its already badly congested a lot of the time.

Like the Railway Bridge idea. Love lighting up the Salisbury Roof!

We need more trees. More mature tress as well, not piddly little things that will take 25 years to grow.

I was looking at St Anns Road yesterday and there are hardly any trees. You can improve the look of a place hugely just by making it more leafy.

Seating Areas at the end of each road - the mini squares. I like the lighting idea and the mature tress in these locations but i just think seating attracts people who just want to loiter, get drunk and be a nuisance. 

Totem Pole? Its different, but again a nice big tree with lights in it would be so much better!

Hugh - I think this thread would be useful to pass on to the people running the project as an addition to the consultation?

I agree, Richard. A key guy in the project is Rob Tao (Secretary of Harringay Traders) who's commented above. The bid for OLF funding was led by Rob and Shefik Mehmet of the Harringay Traders, rather than the Council. So, having Rob on the thread means a, if not the, key guy is aware.

Perhaps I should also formally submit the content of the thread as a PDF to the consultation the Council are running. What do you think?

Gosh that is a surprise. I thought from the literature I received that this was all organised by Councillor Nilgun Canver.

Cllr Canver has been very much involved in the group who have taken the discussion forward following the securing of funds. Clearly, the Council are critical partners in this project and their input is very much to be welcomed. Cllr Canver heads up the Green Lanes Strategy Group who the traders are working with to plan and roll things out. I'm sure Rob will be happy to endorse the value of the councillor's input.

If TFL is making the decision on bus lanes, will they receive copies of our thoughts given to the council and perhaps this thread?

I think that's a very good idea Hugh.
