My electrics tripped 4/5 times in quick succession this afternoon and sadly my computer went off with the loss of power.
The last time it went off I tried rebooting my machine and it did not boot up properly. The same thing happens if I try to reboot in save or normal mode. I get the DOS elements at the beginning, I get the starting windows graphics, the screen goes black (as is usual prior to windows starting up and my seeing the desk top and applications begin to open up on start up). Sadly it stays black, though I can see a cursor. I cannot seem to get it to do anything beyond this.
Anyone any bright ideas as to what to do next to try to get it going again?

I knew you would say that- I was hoping to have a go myself first, but I suspect Marek is the inevitable conclusion- could you mail me his number (my phone email is working). Ta.
Thanks Marek. I am going to give it a go with the original Windows disk to see if this gets me anywhere, but I suspect i will be giving you a bell mid morning!!!
Not sure if you've fixed this yet but I can help.. If you are getting the cursor, I recommend at that stage pushing (all together) Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If it brings up the task manager as it should, this is a good sign. Then go to File > New Task and in there type explorer.exe and click OK.
Just seen this Jez, thanks to you and Chris for responding. As it happens Marek was here most of the afternoon trying to get me back on my feet. Sadly the F8 approach got me nowhere.
Thankfully most of my info is stored on a separate NAS, but I have still lost some valuable info and now have the stress of trying to get everything back up and running.
Honestly, what a pain in the ass!
On the plus side no hardware seems to be broken...
