Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi,

Is there anywhere local to buy coal for our fire?

Thanks

I assume you've had a look at the Council's webpage on air quality and asked for advice on approved fuel and appliances.

There are plenty of approved fuels.  We installed a Defra approved woodburner which really pumps out the heat and has a large glass so that we can enjoy the look of the fire.Petrol stations and Homebase are most local but dont leave it too close to Christmas.

As the previous posts indicate, plenty of places to get coal, and other smokeless variants. However, if you do buy coal, just don't try taking it to Newcastle.

Try Hotties - we used to do Coal till the guilt got to us. You can get em at Lydos or online.

Try Hotties

Why, in saving the earth, do they have to pollute the language? And they make them more infantilely twee by advertising them as "eco-firendly fire bircks". Or maybe they just can't spell. Probably the same thinking as has abolished the Irish turfcutter's livelihood and the wholesome aroma of an open fire. Cough! Cough! Splutter!

Pollute the language? Eddie, I think you've got entirely the wrong end of the wooden stick. Here's the official Hotties website.

No coalfire needed. It's much more user-cuddly than that.

Yes, Cllr Aardvark, Google directed me to your official Hotties website first but I mistook it for the official Haringey Council website, so I closed it quickly lest all those strain-relieving Kober-lookalikes might lead this innocent Paddy astray.

Gosh, are "hotties" some kind of smokeless fuel? And there was I thinking that a "hottie" was what the young people call someone that those of my advanced age would call "sexy". Indeed, when I was a young 'un, a "hottie" was what some people called a hot-water bottle. I don't expect there is any shortage of "hotties" of any kind in Newcastle, so, unlike coals, it would be OK to take some there.

Hi David

We get ours from HG Lockey and Sons in Islington, their address is:

8  Halton Cross Street
Islington
London
N1 2ET

They sell coal, logs, kindling and firestarters, all safe for smoke-free zones. Their prices are comparable to online ones. It is run by Lol and Molly, a lovely couple, who get bonus points from me for always having a big tin of treats for the dog; she loves paying them a visit. They are open during normal business hours and there is meter parking on the street outside their lockup.

Helen

Perfect. Thanks Helen.

David

Make sure you get your chimney swept if you have not already done so, and make sure the chimney is not capped (the sweep will do this for you). I think these are the guys I recently used-http://hfirkinsandsons.co.uk/
