Clocks go back tonight. What would it be like if we extended BST all year round?
Tonight we return to GMT but what would happen if we didn't put the clocks back?
Between 1968 and 1971, Britain tested British Standard Time, which meant keeping BST all year round.
This BBC radio article reflects on this period and reveals possible reasons why the experiment didn't last .

It would stay dark in the mornings for about half the year, particularly in Scotland where it would not get light until about 9.30 in winter. Not good if you are a seasonally affected person. Also people would then be travelling to work in the dark, which presumably would increase the risk of accidents at that end of the day.You can't create more daylight, just shift it around.

I think the bonus of not switching is that kids don't really do much in the way of outdoor activity early in the morning but do after school,so more day light in the afternoon would be of benefit.

And what would it be like if we extended BST all year round on some Ladder roads while more traditionally minded roads returned to GMT?
This morning my one long snooze of the year (in preparation for the imminent darkness of Samhain) here on Wightman South West was shattered by the merry yells of two young nieces-in-law descending upon us from Falkland South East, clearly still devotees of perpetual BST.
Could any Councillor acquainted with the predilections of Falkland Isles folk for extended BST shed light on my darkness?
