Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Claire Kober spotted doing a bit of PR with the press at the Carpet Right site but no sign of any of the local Tottenham ward councillors

She must have forgotten to send them an invitation.

Having spotted this little gathering from my bedroom window I invited myself onto the site and introduced myself to the building director and the several press reporters who were there, along with various Haringey Council staff and their Leader Claire. Don't think Haringey or the Contractors enjoyed what I had to say to them or the press.

I asked why, despite a request by residents, there had been no consultation meeting set up for local residents to air their concerns about the build and the obvious noise pollution and stress it is going to cause to locals who live very close to the site.  Lyn Garner Director of Place & Sustainability couldn't answer me, nor was she even aware that residents had requested a face to face meeting with the council and the developer to express concerns (mainly due to constant breaches in working practices on three other local building developments)

As usual Haringey put on a PR show about rebuilding Tottenham and completely forget to consult the local population.

somewhere in this three hours on the Today programme are bits about Tottenham.  One about 7.15, another before 9 a m. Maybe more. If anyone can listen and post the times here we would be very grateful.  It will be handy to have the names of the journalists.

The main TV guy was from BBC London. I think I rained on Claire PR parade to say the least. How different i could have been had they thought to invite some local residents along to give their views.

Thanks for posting this but i can't be bothered to sit through the radio or even listen to Kober guffing on about how great Tottenham is going be now that Haringey are finally (post a riot) paying us some attention.

They need to sort out community relations between local residents and building developers, and enforce when these companies breach the law. If they get it wrong this time, their will be a s**t storm heading their way.

1:19:40 in!

Thanks, Justin. Did you by chance jot down the timing of the second item in Tottenham as well? I was getting a bit bored with Badminton players accused of throwing matches.

Anyway I've now had a chance to listen to the first part. With several views - including Claire Kober's  fluff, of course. Though I was equally depressed by the other comments. Nobody seems to grasp that Tottenham is an awful lot more than the shops on our High Road.

Perhaps I'll cheer up when I've properly read through the detailed Plan for Tottenham which is now on the Council's website.

Anyone read through it all, who can suggest suitable music?

There's the real world; and there's the PR/Spin/Narrative/fantasy/ world. Good on you Victoria for barging in and reminding everyone there's reality behind the media pageant.

Im just happy i popped my head out of our bedroom skylight this morning, or we have missed the whole show.

Ive been chatting to an independent noise accessor KP Accoustics, really supportive and helpful chat, and they say they are disappointed with the lack of communication with the locals on and around such a sensitive area (they monitor all London boroughs so know their suff)

Cant wait for our 'PR' meeting to be set up now, we can bring in the big guns if the council fail to keep the contractors in line.

It now turns out that the Carpetright PR "event" was the official "launch" of the Tottenham Plan. With BBC and local journalists. Apart from Vicky gatecrashing the party, I wonder if anyone else from Tottenham was there. Or even invited.

Erm nope Alan. I was the only local representing the commoners.

Thank you VIX, I had no bloody idea that there was a launch of any plans today, I was texted by my boss who lives & works in South London to tell me it was on the radio! I thought he was jesting, as he started to tell me about how signifigant M&S is to Tottenham.... eh? Thanks to Pamish, Ive just heard where that pathethically stupid statement came from.

Im livid that we have had riots in the area a year ago this week and nothing, yes NOTHING has been learnt about the need to harness our community. Im sick of these stupid initatives, glossy timeshare style brochures and bland careerism middle management politics... all suits and no substance!

Anyone who thinks that bringing back M&S to Tottenham is the solution is living in la la land! Meanwhile back in the real world ...........

They go on about The Day M&S Left Seven Sisters a lot. Obviously we are all vermin-ridden and drive away the classy stores. The fantasy is that an M&S will be desperate to move back into the hideous Grainger slab. How we laugh.

Pam, however boiling with anger you are about Wards Corner, please consider if there may actually be some possibility of calling a temporary truce on even these basic differences; and looking for and working together on issues we can agree on.

Not because we're opportunistic politicians on the make. But because we share a love of Tottenham and care about the future here. Otherwise the only laughter will come from Claire Kober.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor till 2014)

so where do you think the new M&S will pop up then Mr S?
