Cashpoint Scam - Green Lanes Santander Cashpoint Near Post Office

I believe I've just been subject to an unsuccessful Cashpoint scam.
I was stupidly trying to get hold of some cash at 21:45 on a Sunday evening, the Barclays was out of order so I went up the road to the Santander near the post office.  There were some people waiting by the bus stop so I thought it was safe to use the machine.

Having entered my PIN I was about to choose the amount when a young man approached me from the right and held a copy of the SUN newspaper over the screen and started talking to me in a foreign language. I asked him what he was doing and a young lady approached from the left and did the same thing ... this time with the "Ham & High" and pointing oddly to the H in the word Ham.

I asked them both to "Leave me alone" and they continued holding the newspapers closer and closer to my face.  I realised that this was not just two drunk people having a laugh and they were trying to distract me from the machine.  So I asked them both to "F. off whilst I'm trying to drawer some money out" in the hope this would attract attention from the people at the bus stop, pressed the cancel button and promptly dropped my card. They both seemed very careful not to get too close and didn't get in my way when I left but the whole situation was a bit too odd.

I hope nobody else has had a similar occurrence.

The old newspaper trick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5YDAZvZYmY&feature=related and it is very very old. Well done for staring them down.
Thanks for letting us know that these people are operating there.

I'm glad you were okay. It might be an idea to let the local police know what happened if you haven't done so already.
Grief; not nice. Thanks for alerting us.
I have been the target a couple of times at that very same cash point over the years, they got away with SFA of course. Ignore everyone until you have your money and card back.
Was there anything distinctive about their appearance or dress for us to look out for Ralph

Nothing distinctive I'm afraid. They just looked like most young men and women walking about on green lanes.

The male about 5 foot something, short black hair, think he was wearing some sort of leather or denim jacket and jeans. The female was shorter with long straight black hair. I'm not sure of their nationality but I guess they looked Turkish/middle eastern. Both spoke to me in the same foreign language but it was clear the male spoke English as he took offense to being told to go away. Sorry I can't be more descriptive but my first instinct was to keep my attention on the cashpoint and my card.

Thanks for taking an interest.

Surely there's some CCTV overlooking this spot?
Here's an update.

I've just checked my bank statement ... And there's £250 reportedly drawn out on Sunday night from "AbbeyNational ATM" I presume this is the Santander machine.

I still don't see how they managed to do that! I pressed the cancel button and got my card back.... They must have got it before then or do you think they've cloned my card?

Thanks for all your comments.
Ralph
Cloned your card and possibly captured you tapping your pin number either personally or via small cameras they place out of site above your hand. Bastards!

Always run your hand under the roof of the cash machine and check for devices in or on the card slot. There's sometimes a bulky addition to the slot or even a small device that slots into the card slot, you may see a small thread hanging out!
Ralph, how gutting. I read your original post, can't believe that they got £250. Do tell the bank - I wonder whether anyone else taking money out got caught as well.

Must admit I don't like that cashpoint, too many people always hanging around.

Agree, which is why I was happy when Tesco installed their cashpoint.
Just a thought - still baffled about the waving the papers about part of this tale. Do you think they could have some kind of reader device that they were hiding under the paper, that could clone your card? Otherwise what was the point of that part of it I wonder.

I know nothing about this, just very interested in how on earth you can avoid it.
