Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

In a round-robin about new parking charges that hit my inbox today, Haringey Council wrote the following:

Visitors parking permits will be simplified and no longer be subject to a limited allocation

This is to ensure we are taking a fair approach when it comes to everyone who wants to park in our borough and to encourage people to use other forms of transport if possible.

As I read it they're saying that they're going to make visitor parking permits easier to get "to encourage people to use other forms of transport". So, making it easier to use a car will encourage people not to use a car.

Is there some good logic there that is eluding me or is it the nonsense I think it is?

ADDENDUM:

The discussion that follows from this post has revealed that visitor parking charges will more than double and residents will no longer be able to exchange unused permits.

As Max says further down they are trying to discourage usage but by levying silly fines for box junction infringements and parking at shops. The ownership discouragement is all down to the CPZs. They're even taking away 50 car parking spaces on Wightman Rd to facilitate the smooth flow of even MOAR traffic. They want the streets of Haringey free for their cousins to drive from Enfield to Islington, mostly on Sundays.

I have a stack of visitor parking permits which I bought a year or so ago. Surely the terms under which those were bought still apply?

I have some I bought about ten years ago, with no expiry date. I guess i dont have many visitors before 6.30pm, or is it that all my friends have Freedom Passes?

I would be very reluctant to have to cash them in. Is it clear whether the year run from april to april, or from purchase date?

I used a 2 week permit without an expiry date I bought several years ago and when I tried using it 2 years ago the builders I gave it to were pulled up and told it was not eligible. I had to use daily permits instead and I now no longer have a permit. Haringey did say that if I ever needed one again I could ask them to reissue one, but the chances of this are low and I wonder after this if the pledge will be honored...

Lesson: Just because there is no eligibility date on the permits it does not stop them changing the goal posts...

The whole system is a scam designed to catch people out and raise revenue, simply because they won’t increase council tax.

...going to dig out those original passes. Will scan and post here.  If there's nothing on them about expiry dates, I will insist on being able to use them.  Judicial review if necessary, we're getting the hang of them lately.

Pamish, didn't know you were Jesus Christ. Why didn't you say? I'm guessing most of your pre-6.30pm guests arrive on Sunday between 8am and Noon, so Visitors' Permits aren't required. Anyway, knowing what your church congregations are like these days I'm sure they've all had Freedom Passes for decades.

On Wednesdays you can call me Pam.

I have some BA miles from 20 years ago with no expiry date on them (oops!) and they're still valid but only because some b*stards threatened to take them to court.

The last judicial review you backed got thoroughly rejected!

Hello keyboard warriors.

@pam, had you thought of donating examples to Bruce Castle given their great age??

Here's a chink of light from another thread. I'm sure that all the submissions from readers of this thread will have helped.
