Campaign against TTIP
Today "38 degrees" campaigned to raise awarenes about TTIP with information stalls outside the Salisbury Pub, Wood Green, Seven Sisiters and Crouch End.
TTIP threatens the NHS and schools.
The TTIP agreement will alow public services such as the NHS and education service to be opened up to privatisation and profiteering by multinational corporations and it will not be possible for them to be taken back into public hands in the future.
TTIP threatens our democratic decision making.
TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) is a trade agreement between the US and EU which will give multinational corporations greater power to sue national governments for any loss of future profits resulting from democratic decisions, such as new laws protecting the environment. Already some governments have refrained from acting on democratic laws after being threatened by law suits from multinationals.
TTIP and the right to make profits.
TTIP is an agreement to get rid of anything that will get in the way of making profits. EU and US regulations and rights such as labour rights, food standards, toxic chemicals, banking safeguards, on-line privacy laws etc will be "harmonized", which will mean an attack on hard won rights and a reduction of standards.

The way out is to show that we, together with people campaigning in Europe and in America do not want this trade agreement. So far few people know of the existence of TTIP, and the other 'trade' agreements, and the negotiations have been in secret, but now a vocal opposition is forming.
A similar trade agreement between Canada and the EU, a precursor to TTIP, is running into difficulties particularly over investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms. These measures allow corporations to go before an independent extra judicial tribunal and sue governments for loss of future profits. (The Canadian government decided to take certain polluting additives out of their petrol but the trans national petro-chemical industry frightened them into reversing this democratic decision. If we in the UK decide democratically not to frack shale gas then Canadian company IGas could sue the UK government for loss of future potential profits etc.)
However campaigning from concerned groups has led the EU trade comissioner to concede “I fully agree with the many critics who claim that ISDS until now has led to some very worrying litigation against the state, ” and for the EU to halt negotiations.
France and Germany are now waking up to the full implication of ISDS with regard to TTIP too and are expressing concerns, so campaigning is starting to have an effect.
Some EU states are insisting that their publicly owned industries are excluded from negotiations so it is not a done deal but it is vital that we also pressure our politicians to represent our interests.

It really is a myth to think that UKIP or the Tories are an alternative. Nigel Farage wants a huge increase in MPs pay, and has been silent on TTIP. He has also been silent on the massive subsidies to farmers. He seems to have little problem with US domination either.

It has been difficult for anyone to get involved or even know about these trade agreements as the negotiations have been held in secret, it was only through the Green Party deciding to leak information that we know as much about it as we do.
The day of action yesterday was simply about trying to inform people about TTIP, as reporting in the media has been sparse. It was not a demonstration.
8,000 people bought leaflets from '38 degrees' out of their own money, to hand out at stalls seat up around the country.
The message is getting out there as 156,109 people have now signed a petition to fix or scrap TTIP.

Always found it a bit odd that the Labour Party is characterised by the right as being the puppets of the trade unions, who set up the party in the first place and who represent several millions of working people, but never characterise the Conservatives as the puppets of big business who represent the interests of erm... themselves.

Crikey, they certainly seem to have succeeded in that.

The author John Hilary happens to be speaking at the Labour Party rooms 28 Middle Lane, Crouch End, on Tuesday 2nd at 8 pm. I am not a member of any political party but will be going along as he is an authority on the issue and a good speaker.

Great turn out for this in Wood Green. Shows that despite the main parties quitely ignoring this pact, many people have decided to get involved.

There was also a great turn out in Crouch End on Saturday (sorry no photo) with leafletting and petition signing on both sides of the Broadway. Lots of interest, lots of discussion. If people want to hear more about TTIP and how to expose it they can hear John Hilary of War on Want speak at a meeting in the Labour Party rooms, Middle Lane, on 2 Sep, 8pm. Local campaigning by 38 Degrees Haringey carries on at their next meeting, 10 September, Chestnuts Centre, St Ann's Road, 7.15 for 7.30.
