Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Caged cat in Crouch End shop
The Broadway Fruiterers (15 The Broadway, Crouch End) have a big tabby cat that's kept in a small cage, under a work counter, in a storage space at the back of the shop. I saw the cat there, a few days ago. The cage isn't much bigger than the cat, who seemed very agitated and was clawing at the front of the cage. I asked why they had a cat in a cage and was told that it was none of my business.
Someone put a post about the cat on Facebook and was told that the cat is kept caged during the day and let out in the shop, at night, to catch mice.
I feel so sorry for this poor cat. It's either caged or roaming an empty shop. I can't understand why they would cage it during the day. It seem so cruel.
Can anyone think of how the owners could be persuaded against treating the cat like this?
Also, given that the shop is full of fruit and veg, should the cat even be living there?

Hi Lisa, I suppose they have to prioritise with limited resources, you may find that the person who calls you back is more helpful, initial calls are not always answered by someone who works directly for the RSPCA I believe. x

Yes they don't have the time. I reported neighbours for leaving a crying dog out all night in the freezing cold. They said the same thing

I am curious how the cat can be loved and cared for given the circumstances described. I don't see myself buying from that shop again and I'm grateful to Lisa for bringing it to our general attention although I agree with the general consensus regarding the RSPCA and possibly the EHO as well, if such an entity still exists within the council.

I think the Environmental Health officer will look at it as a food hygiene issue - domestic animals are not banned per se in retail premises. As this is a fruit and veg shop and I assume food is not prepared on the premises (like a restaurant) and raw meat isn’t sold I doubt that food hygiene concerns due to a cat being there are going to be a major issue.

People are so ignorant and cruel. I’m sure the Rspca will get to it and boycott it. I will also look for their Facebook page to shame them. Animal cruelty is the worst

Probably more to do with the RSPCA receiving over a million calls a year and having 340 inspectors to cover the whole of England and Wales that is the main problem Anka
