Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We've been with Virgin for broadband for 6 months and have found the service to be appalling. No service for 8 days over Feb half term (with teenagers), 7 days over Easter with no service and again this weekend as well as numerous outages the rest of the time. Is anyone else in the same situation in 'area 15'? Does anyone have any recommendations? We have to stick with Virgin until November anyway.

There have been endless threads on here berating Virgin and their constant outages. If you can face a wholesale change I can recommend Sky. We get phone line, calls, broadband and TV including sports. Not cheap but very reliable. If you just want line/calls/broadband then BT are good. I set my mum up with them and she's had no problems
We've had BT for years without any problems
Just checked my download/upload speeds using BT and they are 50mbps and 9mbps respectively. Having said that we did have to wait a number of years until BT Infinity made it to our street.
We had Virgin broadband for a long time. It was outrageously unreliable and ultimately, after a 10 day period of no internet, I cancelled our contract. We now have talk talk and we've had no problems so far. It's also cheaper.

Hi Alice, thank you for your posting.  May I ask how you cancelled your Virgin contract?  I have been told by Virgin customer services that in order to cancel my contract, I will have to pay the outstanding 6 months left at a cost of £130.00+.  I my mind that's not cancelation it's day light robbery.

Especially seeing as for each customer that leaves it increases available capacity for other customers and lessens the likelihood that they will leave too.

Hi John, I think we had reached the end of the contract period and luckily there was no fee to pay. The charge you mention is absolutely disgraceful but sadly doesn't surprise me, coming from Virgin Media. If you haven't already, I would consider making a serious complaint. You cannot be expected to pay for a service they are not providing. But it is very exhausting doing all that stuff. I think that's why we were with them so long - I just couldn't face the fight! My fear was that all providers would be the same but turns out no all are as rubbish as V Media, so if you do ultimately make the change, I think it will be worth it. Good luck!
Ps just remembered that we cancelled during a period of no internet, and said we refused to pay if they couldn't provide service - maybe that's why we weren't charged.

Hi John, I managed to leave Virgin (on Wednesday!) only 2 months into my contract and without penalty. It was during a 13 day outage, and I said they weren't honouring their side of the contract and that I wanted to leave without charges etc (since they could not give me a confirmed fix end date). They agreed and cancelled.

We moved to Virgin taking their maximum package (away from BT) briefly when we moved and had trouble getting TV reception through our aerial. We cancelled in the cooling off period as although it "worked" we were getting download speeds at 56k modem rates at peak times and latency of over a second. They finally explained after countless complaint calls it was due to high take up in our area and they hadn't upgraded the infrastructure yet to cope with that uptake - they also couldnt offer when it would be resolved. We went back to BT and have fantastic speed and back to ~30ms latency although we had to spend a bit of money getting a new aerial. I don't like BT's constant in contract price rises but the whole market is doing that at the moment so it can't be avoided.

Exactly the same here, sounds like we are in the same area. I've found Virgin to be appalling. A couple of weeks ago I'd had enough and cancelled my contract. I just complained and refused to budge until they agreed to let me off the remaining charges. They couldn't provide me with any service, so I considered them in breach on contract.
I signed up with BT, who offered to pay for any outstanding virgin bill, luckily I didn't need that. But BT have managed to sort me a new line, a new aerial on the roof, and TV and broadband before Virgin could even fix their own fault.
Do the same, virgin do not deserve the business
I had issues with VM and was getting nowhere so I sent this chap an email and he escalated the issue when I said I'd be leaving VM the minute my contract was up. Give it a go!
