Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Borough refuse problems multiply despite council assurances
Plans by Haringey Council to roll out the remainder of its fortnightly refuse services to the east of the borough have already run into trouble, in the article for the Haringey Independent. Local Lib Dem councillors in the west have complained about the poor level of service since the changes rolled out there at the beginning of the year. More here.
However, the council says there while there were 'teething problems', they have no plans at this time to alter or reverse the changes. I think that it's ridiculous. If they are denying that there is a serious problem with the changes, what is going to happen when our already dirty streets in the east will start to suffer from even worse levels of service, and far from saving taxpayers' money, it will cost us a lot more to put the situation right.
The council needs to admit that their plans are a disaster and revert back to the weekly system and improve the overall service.

Sorry Neville, I simply can't agree. Behaviour change must come, recycling rates must improve. There's not going to be anywhere left to dig the holes to put the landfill and it is enormously wasteful. I share your concerns about how the changes are being implemented, I am worried that 'teething problems' may not be tackled effectively by Veolia but to reverse the changes is simply not an option.

Liz, you're absolutely right that peoples' attitudes should change in terms of how we handle our waste. However, it should not lead to a fifty per cent cut in refuse collections. Other neighbouring councils have far better recycling rates than Haringey... and retain their weekly collections. When you see piles of rubbish start to be packed up in Harringay, it would soon be several times worse when it is introduced in Tottenham.

I note the photo from the attached article shows overflowing bins however if the material that could be recycled was removed from the general waste, for example the paper and cardboard, and instead put into the recycling bin there would be much reduced volume of general waste and no need to collect every week. There is a pressing need for some households to get advice on how to recycle, as someone mentioned on another thread it would be a good idea for the council to provide leaflets/ posters, and for landlords to inform tenants how to manage their refuse, or for Veolia to monitor and contact owners or tenants who need help.
Refuse collection has not been halved, I may be wrong but I thought that recyclable waste would still be collected on a weekly basis. My refuse may not be typical however from my household the proportion of recyclable v general waste is more than 2:1. The largest part, i.e recyclable waste, will still be collected weekly. We produce half a black bag of general waste a week, sometimes less.
