Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

PR Facebook Team, keep putting up Post reminding users of Boroughs Parks to take home their Rubbish

Reporting that it is cost £500,000 to Clear

Not aware of Any of the Borough's Parks having in house Staff ?

Aware they use Mobile Teams

Not aware of them taking on any more Staff in recent Times

Joke is that many of the Few Bins in parks get people walking through, dumping carrier bags of domestic rubbish

Plus most Parks are not cleared on a daily basis

Plus many people using the Parks live in Rooms and Flats and not always viable to take waste home, especially if they have screaming kids in tow

I have added the Comment on their Post, what is the Boroughs Residents and Traders paying High local Taxes, if not for Our Green Spaces

Well aware from Experience in Finsbury Park that you can not put larger bins by entrances. As outsiders will fill them before you leave the area

Also wonder how much of the rubbish is recycled ?

They said bin it or take it home. You conveniently left out the bin it part. I do not see anything wrong with this request. Everyone, including those with children, can take their rubbish home or bin it, whether they live in a flat, room, house, castle... It's a basic thing to teach kids too. I just don't get these posts where you do nothing else but complain on this website. Paying taxes doesn't mean being a slob and leaving your rubbish in the park. Good grief I thought that was common sense.

We should get a thumbs down option for posts like these.

My issue where does cost come from ? Have they Contracted out Park Cleansing

In pictures much seems to be take Away cartons. Years ago at Finsbury park. We use to fill 3,- 4 Skips per week from the park. Events had there own contract cleaners on site. . Park rubbish went out in skips at major depots which then went to Edmonton incinerator

It's the cost that is the issue - if you have experience of estates charges with Homes for Haringey, its the same exorbitant charges for not much at all. I'm sure you could pay a few people 30k a year to drive around to all the parks cleaning non stop and get millions of applications - and still not spend 500k

It’s our rubbish, why shouldn’t we be asked to take it home if the bins are full? And why isn’t it viable for people who live in rooms and flats to dispose of their rubbish when they get home?  Do they normally just dump their household waste in the middle of the floor and complain that someone should come and take it away?  Putting the onus on the council for stuff like this is akin to expecting them to wipe our noses when they run.

What money?  The amount English local authorities have to spend has decreased on average by 21% in the past decade.  In this year alone (and this was before Covid and the massive hit on business rates income) Haringey has to find £24 million in savings.

Parking Fines has to go to Road / Cycle lanes etc

It can only be used on transport and highways

Haringey has Not had Park Keepers for over 40 years , aware as was one of the last ones

Also same time the Dog Patrols Stopped

They was never allowed to issue any form of Penalties

They have Gardiners / What ever Parks need them to do. Not aware they have increased numbers as still see & speak to several around

Council has a policy of outsourcing Council Duties. Which often means paying more for Services, which used to be carried out by people that used to mostly live in Borough

Aware Central Government has reduced Central Funding

But most effected Borough's have far more income coming in from increased Rates and charges

From increase properties and growth in HMO's and past houses being converted to flats

Plus have reduced many past managed Council Services. Yet Wage Bill continues to rise as workers decrease

Local authorities are not allowed to make a profit.  Income has to be either to cover cost or can only be used on ring fenced spending (parking fines can only be used used on specific spendI got for instance)  Littering fines are minute right across the country as it is incredibly difficult to prove that bit of litter X was internationally dropped by Y.  If it was profitable, companies like  Veolia would be bidding for contracts all over the country.  They’re not.

It works where there is an indentifier (for example a vehicle registration or a tenancy agreement) and a clear breach (the vehicle on a double yellow or noise from a property) and the evidence threshold is met.  The problem with littering is that the person, even if caught in the act, can simply walk away and/or refuse to give their name and address.  The enforcement officer can of course produce video evidence but then that has to be matched to one of several million people in London.  In a park it’s unlikely that they will drop litter bearing personal indentifiers such as bank statements

Parking Permits and Road Parking tickets are Ringfenced for Contributions to Highway Issues

Estate Parking would go to Housing

Reports of Parking Charges at Alexandra Palace, reported to be going to Palace Running Costs

Not forgetting as All Services are Contracted out to Contractors. A good slice of income goes to operating Companies

A recent report stated that Highway Parking had made a £11 Million profit
